Urban wildlife at Riverside - and in your garden too

Riverside has just officially become part of the Great Bedminster Urban Nature Reserve. This is a project from the BS3 Wildlife Group, which aims to get as many domestic gardens, parks and other larger spaces in the area to register and to also work together to join up these spaces for the good of our wildlife.

Here at Riverside we have around 4 acres of land, and in addition to the multitude of plants on display we also have a wildlife area with a pond, log piles, bird feeders and pollinator friendly plants, and we have many mature trees on site. A wide variety of species have been spotted here, including invertebrates, birds, amphibians and small mammals. We are also an important link between the green spaces of the Avon New Cut and Greville Smyth Park.

Helping you attract pollinators and other wildlife

We also want to help you, our customers, to be wildlife friendly in your gardens, no matter where you live in Bristol, or beyond. Something we get asked for a lot is help with choosing plants that are good for bees and other pollinators. We now have a special display near our entrance with resources about pollinators, examples of plants that attract them and an info sheet you can take away that gives you an extensive list of plants that provide food to insect species at various times of the year. You can also access this list on the link below.

We also have bird feeders and food, hedgehog houses, bug hotels and books about gardening for wildlife in our shop, and you can always ask us for any advice.
Plants for Pollinators

Refresh your patio pots

If your summer pots and baskets are looking a bit tired, never fear! Our first Pansies and Violas of the season are in now, as well as Heathers and lots of other delightful bits and pieces to liven up your patio plantings for the rest of the summer and well into autumn.

Bulbs for autumn planting

Our shop staff have been busy unboxing bulbs - from Alliums, Bluebells and Crocus to Narcissus, Tulips and many more - all ready for you to plant this autumn. There's no rush to get any of these in the ground just yet, but we always recommend shopping early for the best choice of varieties.

New season trees now in!

If you've been thinking about adding a tree to your garden, come and have a browse of our freshly stocked tree lines. Whether it's an ornamental or fruit tree you're after (or even if you're not quite sure which!) we hope you'll find the perfect tree for you. If you need any help choosing, or any advice on planting or caring for your new tree, please just ask.

Happy to help.

If you have any questions at all then please feel free to contact us, we'd love to hear from you!
