Nurse Scientists Contribute to AI Model that Predicts Cardiac Events in Firefighters

Dillon Dzikowicz, PhD, RN, PCCN, and Mary Carey, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN, contributed to the development of a machine-learning model that accurately identifies abnormal cardiac rhythms in firefighters. Researchers envision that this model could be incorporated into portable heart monitors that firefighters could wear on duty to warn them of cardiac irregularities in real time. Their findings were published in Fire Safety Journal.

Local Partnership Aims to Advance Recovery Research, Health Outcomes

School of Nursing and URMC Center for Community Health & Prevention faculty partnered with Recovery Houses of Rochester to form the Community Capital Alliance for Recovery Research. This initiative seeks to improve substance use disorder recovery, sexual health, and mental health outcomes while advancing research on sober living facilities. Future findings could help to ensure sustained recovery outcomes and shape advocacy for funding and policy change.

Meet Our New Faculty

The School of Nursing welcomed three new nurse researchers to its faculty in Summer 2023. Click on their names to read more about each of them.

Dillon Dzikowicz, PhD, RN, PCCN, joined the faculty after earning his PhD here, and holds a second faculty appointment at URMC's Clinical Cardiovascular Research Center. He aims to advance cardiovascular care through research interests in cardiovascular disease, clinical informatics, and machine learning.

Lauren Ghazal, PhD, FNP-BC, arrived in July after completing a post-doctoral fellowship in cancer care delivery research at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on the cancer survivorship needs of adolescents and young adults, with a focus on financial toxicity among this age group. She will have a faculty affiliation with Wilmot Cancer Institute’s Cancer Prevention and Control research group.

Sukardi Suba, PhD, RN, who joined the faculty after two years as a postdoctoral research associate here, is a critical care/trauma clinical nurse specialist and scientist with research interests in electrocardiography, patient monitoring, and data science. He also brings years of experience as an ICU nurse in Indonesia.

8th Annual DNP Summit: Themed Better Together: DNP and PhD Collaboration, UR Nursing's annual DNP Summit will explore how nurses with practice and research doctorates complement and advance one another’s work across nursing research, practice and education. Over the span of three Fridays (Oct. 6, 13 and 20), the summit will feature speakers from URMC, Vanderbilt, Michigan State, and James A. Haley Veterans Hospital. Three contact hours are available. Register today.
Simulation Summit 2023: The School of Nursing is partnering with Simulation Educators of Western New York (SEWNY) to co-host the 2023 Simulation SummitInnovations in Simulation: Reimagine Your Horizon. Set in Helen Wood Hall's state-of-the-art expansion, the summit will offer best-practice based experiential workshops, interactive breakouts, and plenary sessions by national and local experts. Registration is open now, with limited space. Five contact hours are available.
