Dear Adaire Community,

It is almost time to start a new school year! My entire team and I are excited and ready to welcome all of our students back to school starting Tuesday, September 5th - the first day of school.

Our teachers and school staff are attending training sessions to continue to support our students’ needs. Student schedules are being created. Our hard-working custodians have been cleaning and sanitizing our school. Also, our cafeteria workers are preparing to serve your children a delicious and healthy breakfast and lunch each school day. School improvements include a refresh of our technology lab. To support a more inviting school environment for students and staff, Ben Volta’s incredible mural is improving the school grounds. The wooden fencing for our rain garden will protect the growth of our greenery. We are excited about our full implementation of PBIS!!!

This year, we’re delighted to welcome a few new additions to our staff:
  • Brianna Rivera, Kindergarten
  • Tom Ng, 4th grade
  • Sean Gray, 6th grade
  • Suraya Stoudt, Interventionist Math Support
  • Dan Peterson, Music
  • Betsey Leonard, PreK
  • Jackson Goldberg, Building Substitute

I invite all of our families to attend our in-person Back-to-School Open House on Thursday, September 21 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. This will be a great time to meet key staff members, learn more about the new school year and tour our school. In the meantime, I encourage you to take a few minutes to visit www.philasd.org/ringthebell for the latest back-to-school information in multiple languages.

All of us at Adaire look forward to welcoming students back to school in person on Tuesday, September 5th! As always, please feel free to reach out to me at 215-400-7480 or ajenkins@philasd.org with any questions.

2023-2024 Adaire School Calendar
We know that keeping our families informed about upcoming school-related events is important and once teachers are back in the building, the Google calendar on the school’s website will be THE place for up-to-date info. Pro Tip: you can actually subscribe to the Adaire calendar so you have it all on your phone (instructions here). But until that’s ready, we have a start-of-the-year calendar you can view or print here.  Please know that information, especially from January onward, is tentative and subject to change.

Useful Info for New Families (& the rest of us too)
Last year, volunteers assembled this handy document with answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we hear from families. Supply lists, uniforms, health form. It gives you a quick rundown on all the most important info.
2023-2024 Teacher Assignments
You can now log in to the SDP Parent Portal to view your child’s 23-24 teacher assignments. When you log in, click on the “School Net” icon, then “Student Overview.” If you need assistance, you can call the front office Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm. If you’ve never used the parent portal before, the link above also has instructions for setting up your account.
Pre-K Families: Orientation Meeting - Sept. 5th @ 8:35am (Meet in the schoolyard)
Families will be contacted by Pre-K staff during the week of August 29th when teachers/staff are back in the building. Then, on Tuesday, September 5th, the PreK teachers will hold a family orientation for their assigned students. Please gather in the schoolyard near the playground. After the group orientation, individual conferences will be scheduled between September 5 - September 12. After each individual conference, the child can start the next school day. There is a rolling admission of children at the beginning of the year.
Friends of Adaire Public Meeting - Sept. 7th @ 6pm (Fishtown Rec)
Friends of Adaire (FoA) will be having their big public meeting for the year on Thursday, September 7th, 6pm at Fishtown Rec. Bring a chair and a picnic dinner, if you’d like and learn more about how FoA raises funds, builds community, and has a whole lot of fun doing it. New faces are very much welcome.
School Advisory Council General Meeting - Sept. 12th @ 6pm (Zoom)
Adaire’s School Advisory Council (SAC) meets every other month to discuss important happenings at the school and provide the school leadership with valuable input. All family members, students, staff, and community members are welcome at SAC meetings. The meeting is held via Zoom, and camera-off multitasking is very much allowed. Register here to get the meeting link (will be automatically sent to you upon registration).
Family Engagement Interest Form 2023-2024 (Time to Update Your Info)
Engaged families help make Adaire great - and that engagement takes many forms. Your help with one event, one field trip, or one project can make a huge impact!! If you have even the slightest interest, please fill out this Google form to tell us a bit about yourself and how you might like to get involved this year. Returning families should complete it as well so we can get your updated info. No commitments required, we promise. To that end, if you have a few open hours on days that there is an in-service or early dismissal and would like to help out in the building–let us know! There are small projects that can always be tackled when the students are not in the building.
Meet-ups & Uniform Swap - Sunday, August 20
We have a few different events happening this Sunday at Fishtown Rec.
  • PreK Meet-up @ 12 noon. We will meet in the hockey rink where there is shade and the kids are easy to wrangle. Bring a drink and an outside toy. Snacks will be provided.
  • Kindergarten Meet-up @ 5pm. The sprinklers will be flowing and pizza will be provided. Bring a water bottle or drink of your choice.
  • Uniform Upcycle & Swap @ 5-6:30pm. This is for families of all ages. If you have items to share, bring them (good condition only, please). No need to bring things in order to take.
Contact Carey Rhodes at AdaireSAC.Organizer@gmail.com if you have questions.
Playworks Returns to Adaire
Playworks (different from PlayArts!) helps kids stay active and build valuable social and emotional skills through play. They believe all kids deserve the social, emotional, and physical benefits of play and help schools create healthy play environments where every child can join in. They build a culture of play that enables kids to feel a real sense of belonging, so all kids have the opportunity to contribute on the playground, in the classroom, and in our community. Our Playworks leader, Bridget, is already busy getting ready for the school year!
Uniform Upcycle
We have bins of gently worn school uniforms that are accessible in the school building during the week (or at the swap this Sunday!) If you’d like to look through them or donate items, please call the front office before heading over to be sure someone can let you inside.  Remember, you do not have to donate items to take items. We are in need of smaller sizes for our Pre-K students, if you have items that meet the uniform color requirements. Thank you!
SAC Enrichment & Engagement Committee Meeting - Sept. 20 @ 8pm
The School Advisory Council’s (SAC) Enrichment & Engagement Committee plans all sorts of fun activities throughout the school year. If you love fun events like a middle school dance, science fair, and career week this is a great group to get involved with. Contact Chair Lindsay Li at AdaireSAC.Enrichment@gmail.com for more info. New volunteers are needed this year!
Adaire PreK Families Have a Facebook Group
Families enrolled in the first Adaire PreK class have created a Facebook group for all PreK-specific topics. Join here if you wish. Please note, Facebook is not an official means of communication from the school - just a space for family-to-family communication and community building.
New Math Curriculum Materials
The rollout of the new curriculum resources, Illustrative Mathematics, will begin this school year.  All materials have arrived at Adaire and staff will engage in professional development beginning next week. You can learn more in the SDP Mathematics Instructional Guide.
Swimmo Open Until Sept. 2nd
It’s time to get in your last summer swim!  The Swimmo’s last open day is on Saturday, Sept. 2nd. Thank you for a great season! If your kids want more, did you know that swim lessons and swim team is available at the YMCA
Fishtown AC Fall Soccer
Register for in-house soccer here. In-house is for birth years starting in/after 2018. They play Sundays at 6pm at Shissler field. For travel soccer, please contact Fishtown AC on Facebook.
Fishtown Fall Festivale
Now called the Fishtown Fall Feastivale, this outdoor end-of-summer food festival & celebration features local restaurants and over 50 local art & retail vendors. On Saturday, September 24th, enjoy live music on the stage while you find all your favorite fall treats and enjoy a great night out with friends right in Fishtown District. The event runs along Frankford Avenue, between Girard Avenue and Columbia Ave, with additional festival activities along Master, Shackamaxon, and Lee Streets.
Fishtown Library September Activities
There is a LOT going on at Fishtown Library. Children’s Librarian Allegra will be hosting an afterschool drop-in program for kids ages 8-12 where kids can do Legos, puzzles, and maybe even get a little help with their homework. There is also a program for neurodiverse kids, a teen gaming program, and a teen SAGA group.  Click here to download or print their full September calendar.
Do you know of a community event that’s perfect for the Adaire E-News? If so, you can submit content suggestions here. You can also email AdaireSAC.Communications@gmail.com with feedback or if you’d like to get involved with the E-news. We are hoping for a team of 5-6 volunteers by September. Commitment is only 1-2 hours per month.
