Vulnerability as a Mirror

Pedro and I have spent the last few years talking and listening intently to each other. It was an inevitable part of working together on a documentary film, whenever I would interview him on-camera. But even after the recording has ended, our conversations would continue – perhaps turning deeper, more tender, more vulnerable.

I recently learned that my most favorite pastime is listening to other people talk about what they’re going through. Selfishly, it allows me to make sense of my own life by finding a piece of myself in other people, as if I’m staring at a mirror. Now that our film is done, Pedro and I continue to have our heart-to-hearts: with each other, with our film colleagues, and with our audiences whenever we attend screenings. These moments, I will cherish forever. I hope that once you watch unseen, it could also serve as your portal to vulnerability, just like it did for Pedro and me. (SH)

Screenings and Festivals

Join us and invite your friends for our upcoming festival and theatrical screenings:

We will also be at the Gene Siskel Film Center on October 7-9 for our Chicago Premiere. Tickets are available now. Screenings with Open Audio Descriptions will be available.

Note: Our screening at the Woodstock Film Festival is particularly special since they supported our film’s development through their 2021 Filmmaker Residency and Incubator at White Feather Farm. Thank you to the WFF staff and mentors! More festival screenings are coming up this Fall. Stay tuned as schedules are announced.

Philadelphia Inquirer headline: The 2023 BlackStar Film Festival starts Wednesday. Here's what we are watching. From a program of over 90 films from over 30 countries, we talk about the films that excites us the most.

The Roundup

  • The Philadelphia Inquirer listed unseen as “definitely a must-watch” film at the BlackStar Film Festival earlier in August: “I am excited to see how they explore the intersections of undocumented immigration in the U.S. and disability through the life of the film’s protagonist, Pedro. “

  • Speaking of, our Disability Justice Spotlight panel at the BlackStar Film Festival is now live on YouTube. Learn how we incorporated accessibility in every aspect of our process. Special thanks to Firelight Media for co-presenting.

  • A Story Only You Can Tell, our CAAMFest Filmmaker Summit Panel, is now available on YouTube. The prompt: How have the panelists navigated their commitment to their vision for the story while also creating a universal and accessible story for those outside their immediate communities?
