No birthdays this week!
Last Week: Club Meeting

The club meeting for 9th August 2023 at Moerlina School wasn't live streamed on Facebook. With no external guest speaker planned, the video of RI President Gordon McInally's speech at the recent Rotary International Convention in Melbourne was shown. The video has been shared on our Facebook page, and is also available below for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

RI Convention 2023: GS4 - 2023-24 RI President Gordon R. McInally

Social Afternoon at the Tee Box Cafe

With covid striking Nishi's household, "Nosh at Nishi's" was switched at short notice to an afternoon tea at the Tee Box Cafe on Sunday 13th August.

It was a gloriously sunny day to relax outside. Present were President Fiona, PP Simone, Ronniet, Wes, Loren (plus wife Sherrell), and Dan (plus wife Madeleine and daughter Matilda).
Uncle John's 90th Birthday

Our Singaporean members, Sheila and LAU, were invited by the family of Uncle John to celebrate his 90th Birthday.
Uncle John asked Sheila what the logo on her T-shirt means. She explained to him in the Hakka dialect, and told him the new Rotary International Theme of RI President Gordon Mclnally is: CREATE HOPE in the WORLD.

Sheila asked Uncle John what does HOPE mean to him at his age? HOPE to Uncle John is happiness and good health.

Uncle John thanked Sheila for the home-cooked food and baked cookies in the shape of the longevity peach. He likes all the cards and the birthday wishes written in both English and Chinese languages.

  • Looking to develop their self-esteem and confidence
  • Interested in developing skills including leadership, teamwork, communication, goal setting and problem solving

then we'd love to have them attend the RYPEN camp from 15th - 17th September 2023.

RYPEN depends on Rotary Clubs to sponsor participants. If you know someone that is interested in attending that our club could sponsor, please let the Youth committee know!

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)

RYLA is an intensive eight-day program designed for 18-28 year olds with leadership potential and a commitment to community service. The program is a unique opportunity aimed to bring participants out of their comfort zone and challenge them to think outside the square while actively using and building on their existing skills and knowledge.

RYLA includes seminars, workshops, physical activities and team games relating to areas including Communication and Public Speaking, Leadership, Team Work and Group Dynamics, Problem Solving and Decision Making, Goal Setting, Time Management and Self Awareness and Emotional Intelligence.

The next RYLA will be held at the Serpentine Camping Centre from Saturday 6th January – Saturday 13th January 2024.

Applicants are interviewed prior to acceptance onto RYLA.  Successful applicants will have the energy, commitment and motivation to develop their leadership potential and be willing to challenge themselves physically and mentally over the course of the program.  Applicants who have come via a Rotary Club receive priority acceptance into the program.

Rotary Club Sponsorship for a RYLA participant is $920, and the participant contribution is $250.  This includes all activities, accommodation and meals for the week.

Applications are now open, and will close on 30th November 2023. Applications are completed online at: https://forms.office.com/r/UPaaHcB9Fp

So far in 2023/24, we've raised $232.40 from recycling containers.

As one of our main sources of income for our projects, your assistance in sourcing, collecting, and/or returning containers is greatly appreciated, especially as this amount has drastically dropped off this Rotary year.

Project Coordinator PP Simone Collins is happy to provide any information or support.

"Today's generation supports causes rather than organizations, and so we in Rotary should be able to clearly identify the causes that drive us. When somebody asks you what Rotary is, you do not have to fumble for words. Tell the person that we are an organization of service-minded individuals around the world who are working to make the world a better place with our efforts in water and sanitation, basic education and literacy, maternal and child health, disease prevention and treatment, economic and community development, and peace and conflict resolution. You can say that in 20 seconds!"
- Past RI President Bill Boyd in the January 2012 edition of "The Rotarian"
