Dear readers,

I am pleased to welcome you to the July 2023 edition of the SLYCAN Trust Newsletter, a testament to collaborative action and building long-term and sustained resilience.

Our featured stories for July shed light on impactful partnerships, South-South collaboration, and inclusive and participatory processes aimed at creative transformative change through climate policy and action. Within SLYCAN Trust’s work programme on Loss and Damage, we forged a partnership with the Government of Uganda, marked by a workshop and a Memorandum of Understanding. Equally important, we delved into the gaps and needs for addressing climate-induced loss and damage at a workshop that was co-organized in partnership with the Ministry of Environment of Sri Lanka.

This edition also brings to your attention a new partnership between SLYCAN Trust and EthicalX's Climate and Innovation Hub with CLIMAFUGE, a Post-SB58 Debrief event organized by SLYCAN Trust Youth, and the launch of our fellowship programme on the Global Goal for Adaptation.

Within the SLYCAN Trust Knowledge Hub, you will find two substantial new products: a Background Note on Interfacing the Global Goal on Adaptation with Other Processes and Finding Convergence and a Case Study Brief on Climate-Induced Loss and Damage and Internal Human Mobility in Ghana.

As we navigate the complexities of addressing climate change, it is my sincere hope that these stories will provide both information and inspiration, showcasing the commendable efforts of individuals, governments, civil society, communities and multiple stakeholders working together towards a resilient future for all.

Warm regards,
Vositha Wijenayake

Loss and Damage
SLYCAN Trust and Government of Uganda launch partnership for building climate resilience
SLYCAN Trust signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Uganda, represented by the Ministry of Water and Environment, to collaborate and work together on areas related to research, evidence generation, climate policy, capacity-building, and engagement in regional and international climate change processes. The MoU was signed in June during the 2023 Bonn Climate Change Conference (SB58) in the presence of the Hon. Minister of State of Environment, Beatrice Anywar Atim.

To officially launch the partnership in Uganda and present its first outputs, a full-day workshop was organized by the Ministry of Water and Environment of Uganda in partnership with SLYCAN Trust on 26th, 2023 in Kampala. The workshop drew a diverse gathering of 45 participants, including representatives from key ministries, climate negotiators, civil society, the private sector, academia, and youth advocates.

Beyond the launch of the MoU, the workshop spotlighted a country case study on Loss and Damage (L&D) and human mobility. It also served to present the country case study on L&D and human mobility in Ghana, and collect inputs for the case study as well as a national scoping exercise on climate-induced L&D.

Esteemed attendees included Permanent Secretary Alfred Okot Okidi, represented by Commissioner Margaret Mwebesa, Climate Change Commissioner Margaret Mwebesa herself, Commissioner Joseph Epitu, and the distinguished Prof. John B. Kaddu, who serves as Uganda's lead negotiator on L&D.
Workshop on Identifying Gaps and Needs Related to Addressing Climate-Induced Loss and Damage in Sri Lanka
The Ministry of Environment of Sri Lanka in partnership with SLYCAN Trust hosted a workshop on climate-induced L&D aimed at identifying gaps and needs for addressing climate-induced loss and damage (L&D) in Sri Lanka. The workshop charted the landscape of existing knowledge and data sources related to L&D in Sri Lanka, including both sudden- and slow-onset occurrences, as well as economic and non-economic dimensions of L&D. Notably, the workshop also emphasized the cross-cutting theme of gender in addressing climate-induced L&D in Sri Lanka.

Held on July 10th, 2023, at the Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo, the event gathered the participation of 106 stakeholders spanning various sectors, including government, private, and academia. The attendees represented sectors such as electricity (power), transportation, industry, waste management, forestry, agriculture, fisheries, livestock, biodiversity, coastal and marine, health, urban planning and human settlements, and tourism and recreation.
EthicalX

SLYCAN Trust and EthicalX: Climate & Innovation Hub announced a partnership with CLIMAFUGE on July 6th, 2023, at Cinnamon Grand Colombo, Sri Lanka. Youth
Engaging Youth for Climate Action: Post-SB58 Debrief
SLYCAN Trust Youth hosted the Post-SB58 Youth Debrief on July 22, 2023, as part of the Global Youth Forum on Climate Change. The event was organized following the UNFCCC Bonn Climate Change Conference (SB58), which was held in Bonn, Germany, in June 2023. The Post-SB58 Youth Debrief offered an inclusive platform in which youth from across various regions had the opportunity to learn about the outcomes of SB58, and explore opportunities for sustained engagement and impact while facilitating knowledge sharing, collaboration, inspiration, and feedback.

The session focused on the topics of ACE, Climate Adaptation, Loss and Damage, GST, Agriculture and food systems, Finance and Article 6, Climate Mitigation and Just Transition, followed by a group discussion focusing on the 4 Glasgow Priority areas. Presenters of the session included Kavindu Ediriweera (SLYCAN Trust), Lana Weidgenant (ProVeg International), Samuel C. Okorie (POP Nigeria initiative), Pan Ei Ei (Alliance for Global Water Adaptation), Lydia Dai (YOUNGO), Genn Godoy Gonzalez (YOUNGO), Deon Schekuza (NAYoRE) and Lwendo Choongo ( SDG Goal 01 Youth organization).

The event followed with presentations from speakers on the topics of Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE), climate change adaptation, loss and damage, the Global Stocktake (GST), agriculture and food systems, climate finance, Article 6, climate change mitigation, and just transition, followed by a group discussion focusing on the four priority areas of the Glasgow work programme on ACE.

The event exemplified a collaborative and educational effort to engage youth in shaping the future of climate action, emphasizing sustained engagement and impact, and encouraging the proactive involvement of young leaders from around the world.
Global Goal on Adaptation
New fellowship programme launched under the GGA work programme

An initial online GGA fellowship capacity-building call was held on July 20th, 2023. It brought together the first four country fellows to build their capacities on the GGA, and discuss the timeline of activities up to COP28, which will see engagement around the 7th and 8th UNFCCC workshops on the GGA, the Africa and Asia-Pacific Regional Climate Weeks, and COP28.

The fellows had been nominated under our work programme on the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), building on our partnerships with the Governments of Ghana, Maldives, Niger, and Uganda. They will receive technical support and capacity-building, enhancing their ability to engage in GGA workshops and negotiations leading up to COP28, including through the development of position papers and country submissions to the UNFCCC.

The background note was prepared ahead of the 7th workshop under the GGA work programme and draws on UNFCCC decisions, submissions from developing countries, discussions held during the previous GGA workshops, documents prepared by the UNFCCC (including the concept note for the 7th GGA workshop), and inputs from a pre-workshop webinar hosted by SLYCAN Trust on July 25th, 2023, with almost a hundred Party delegates attending.
Case Study Brief: Climate-Induced Loss and Damage and Internal Human Mobility in Ghana

Ghana, like other Sub-Saharan African nations, faces high vulnerability to climate change impacts. Existing environmental and social stresses, such as biodiversity loss, water scarcity, diseases, and reduced agriculture, are worsened by climate change, leading to poverty and resource depletion. The case study brief was created in partnership between Ghana's Environmental Protection Agency and SLYCAN Trust as part of our work programme on loss and damage. The development was led by the Ghana country fellow, Esther Mireku, with technical support from SLYCAN Trust.
