What's On This Week

This week we will be meeting at Moerlina School on August 9th. We look forward to seeing you face to face!

You are also invited to join us for afternoon tea at the Tee Box Cafe (Lapsley Rd, Claremont) on Sunday 13th August at 3pm. Please note the change of venue; this was originally planned to take place at the home of one of our members, but covid has foiled that plan!
No birthdays this week!
Last Week: Club Meeting

The club meeting for 2nd August 2023 was held via Zoom, which enabled a few members who aren't able to make it to the meetings at Moerlina because of distance to fully participate.

With a continued focus on increasing engagement, more ideas were discussed, which include mixing up the weekly meetings and creating a WhatsApp group for members to easily connect in between meetings.

We are looking at varying the weekly meeting format, taking on some ideas that other clubs use. From September, we are looking at:

  • 1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month meeting via Zoom
  • 2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month meeting at Moerlina
  • 5th Wednesday being a social event or vocational visit
We also discussed the need for meeting fees even when meeting via Zoom, as there are still running costs associated with using Zoom, and the meeting fees also contribute to the other running costs of our club.
Divine Mercy School Fencing

We have received an update from Rotarian John Bosco Agaba in Uganda this week regarding the fencing we have funded for Divine Mercy School:

All wooden poles have been put in the ground. Just waiting a little to have them firm and a barbed wire fixed. The school management committee has resolved that we wait for the term to end so that works are done when children are not at school to avoid obstruction. The term ends on August 25, 2023.
RYPEN

The Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) is a weekend-long camp.

If you know someone who is 14-17 years of age who is
  • Wanting an opportunity to develop and challenge themselves
  • Looking to develop their self-esteem and confidence
  • Interested in developing skills including leadership, teamwork, communication, goal setting and problem solving
  • Wanting to build a network of young people and to make new friends
  • Excited for a weekend of fun
then we'd love to have them attend the RYPEN camp from 15th - 17th September 2023.

RYPEN depends on Rotary Clubs to sponsor participants. If you know someone that is interested in attending that our club could sponsor, please let the Youth committee know!

Applications close 23rd August 2023.
Do you have news to include in the bulletin? Details of upcoming speakers, more background about new projects, photos of events and other information of interest to members and friends of the club? Please email them before Sunday to bulletin@rotaryfreshwaterbay.org.au - verbal updates and updates via other social avenues may not be remembered / seen by the time the bulletin is prepared!
Containers for Change Update
So far in 2023/24, we've raised $166.60 from recycling containers.

As one of our main sources of income for our projects, your assistance in sourcing, collecting, and/or returning containers is greatly appreciated, especially as this amount has drastically dropped off this Rotary year.

Project Coordinator PP Simone Collins is happy to provide any information or support.

Rotary International President Nominee Announced

Mário César Martins de Camargo, a member of the Rotary Club of Santo André, São Paulo, Brazil, has been selected to become Rotary International President for 2025-26.

He will officially become the nominee on 15 September if no other candidates challenge him.

A Rotarian since 1980, de Camargo has served Rotary as director, trustee, RI learning facilitator, committee member and chair, and task force member.

De Camargo plans to boost Rotary’s public image by working from the top down.

“Rotary today has strong competition for members and funds,” he says. “We need to rejuvenate the brand, especially in some zones. We should utilize post-pandemic meeting tools … to allow the president to address Rotarians all over the globe. We also need to develop more long-term partnerships with political, community, and business leaders. Let’s emphasize our greatest asset: 1.4 million volunteers.”

He also hopes to improve Rotary’s process for appointments and governance.

“Rotary should adopt a more transparent system to appoint volunteers for positions, with clear criteria and data-based evaluation of results,” he says.

When you are inducted into a Rotary Club, one of the items you are presented is a Rotary lapel pin.

Wearing your Rotary pin with pride identifies you to other Rotarians, and those who recognise the emblem. With the Four Way Test at the heart of Rotary, wearing your Rotary pin indicates you are a person with integrity.

For those that don't recognise the Rotary emblem, it can serve as a conversation starter. Curious people will ask what the pin is for, which opens the door to share what it is that we do in Rotary, and how we make a tangible difference to our local and global communities.

Consider putting on your Rotary pin every morning, and see who notices and what response it provokes!
