Ocean Discovery League Newsletter | August 2023

Ahoy!

This month, we’re excited to release the latest Global Deep Sea Capacity Assessment data in a recently published Frontiers in Marine Science article. We have reexamined the 2022 data to look at the results through an income-level lens and highlight specific findings related to Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

SIDS face unique social, economic, and environmental challenges, and for many of them, the ocean is their primary source of natural resources. These factors make them particularly vulnerable to biodiversity loss and climate change and a unique consideration for deep-sea research and exploration capacity. Assessment respondents for SIDS had different perspectives on the most important deep-sea issues, prioritizing climate change and the protection of their marine environments and communities over basic science.

The Declaration for the Enhancement of Marine Scientific Knowledge, Research Capacity, and Transfer of Marine Technology created by AOSIS (Alliance of Small Island States) at 2022's UN Ocean Conference encouraged the global ocean community to co-design and co-develop solutions and build long-term relationships recognizing SIDS as "key partners rather than passive beneficiaries," and that country-relevant, context-specific, flexible solutions guided by needs assessments are critical.

I hope these latest findings help support these co-design efforts and the creation of more tailored approaches in these locations.

ODL Participates in OceanX's Young Explorers Program

Earlier this month, ODL participated in OceanX's fourth Young Explorers program aboard OceanXplorer, sailing from Bergen, Norway, to Brest, France. Our team joined faculty and staff from OceanX, Spelman College, Black in Marine Science, Stanford University, and others as instructors and mentors for 16 undergraduate students.

During the ten-day expedition, students had the opportunity to learn about impactful storytelling, ocean advocacy, oceanography, marine biology, and other career pathways in ocean exploration.
