Analyzing Medical Literature: Tracking Topics Over Time
Panel with: Claudia von Vacano, Pratik Sachdeva, Moustafa Abdalla, & Melissa Grafe

Archives of published medical literature illuminate the evolution of medical care and research, shedding light on professional norms, ethics, and values. Experts from digital social science, technological sciences, library sciences, and historical perspectives present case studies from their institutions, followed by a guided dialogue on analyzing medical literature to reveal insights about healthcare trends, systemic inequalities, and more. The Digital Health Humanities Symposium Lightning Talks include our Executive Director, Dr. Claudia von Vacano and Senior Data Scientist, Dr. Pratik Sachdeva from UC Berkeley's D-Lab, Dr. Moustafa Abdalla from Massachusetts General Hospital, and Melissa Grafe from Yale University's Medical Historical Library.

UC Berkeley MaCSS Instructors

The new Master of Computational Social Science (MaCSS) is a one-year, on-campus program that will provide students with practical skills for analyzing, interpreting, & visualizing data in the context of social-science frameworks. The program is intended for people with BAs in the social sciences who are in the early career stage. MaCSS graduates will be able to work as analysts & data specialists in business, non-profit, & government settings.

MaCSS is seeking instructors to develop and deliver 2 courses.

1) Data, Society, and Ethics (Fall 2024, 3 units): Suggested topics include potential harms in data collection, aggregation, & analysis (e.g., violations of privacy, bias); transparency, reproducibility & explainability in data analysis; how (not) to lie with statistics. Assignments involve documenting code for a computational assignment, investigating & writing a report on bias in an ML algorithm.

2) Data Visualization (Spring 2025, 2 units): Suggested topics include tables & charts (bar, line, rose, etc.); multivariate displays; networks & trees; geospatial maps; data aggregation; using color effectively.  Assignments involve the practicalities & aesthetics of showing patterns in data.

Both courses will be held in person and involve a mixture of short lecturers, active learning using datasets analyzed with some combination of R & Python/Jupyter notebooks. Both will have GSIs to hold tutorials and help grade.

Offering competitive compensation for course development and course delivery; looking for people with PhDs and/or people who do computational research in social science.
