Dear <<First Name>>

u3a Week is fast approaching - this year it is taking place 16-24 September.

This annual celebration is a chance for us to share the fun and learning of the u3a movement with our wider communities.

In previous years, u3as have had recruitment fairs, taken part in walking challenges, litter-picked on beaches - and much more. I really look forward to seeing what you all get up to this year - and please let us know what you are planning by emailing u3aweek@u3a.org.uk.

Alongside your local activities, we are also running an exciting programme of online events. We are delighted to have Carl Honoré, award winning writer, broadcaster and activist on ageing, challenging us to embrace ageing as an adventure. We will also be joined by Heléna Herklots as an advocate for older adults in her role as Commissioner for Older People in Wales, and by John Tucker from the Woodland Trust. Find out more about these events below.

I hope many of you will take part in u3a Week this year. We may be spread out across the UK but every member of u3a is a part of our wider u3a community.

very best

Sam Mauger,
Chief Executive

Do we need a Commissioner for Older People?

Tuesday 19 September, 3pm

This special online event hosted by the u3a Future Lives group will give u3a members the chance to hear from Heléna Herklots CBE, Older People’s Commissioner for Wales. This is an opportunity to hear about the important work of a commissioner, ask questions and share what issues you would like a commissioner to be addressing.

Trees, woods, climate and nature – what’s all the fuss about?

Wednesday 20 September, 10am

John Tucker from the Woodland Trust, a forester with nearly 30 years experience, will be leading a discussion on how to get involved in supporting wildlife and the environment. This follows on from the movement's incredible achievement in helping to plant nearly 10,000 trees for our 40th anniversary wood last year.

Bolder – How To Age Better, and Feel Better About Ageing

Thursday 21 September, 10am

We are delighted to welcome Carl Honoré, award-winning writer, broadcaster and TED speaker, in this exclusive online talk for u3a members. He will be talking about how to embrace ageing as a privilege and an adventure.

Alfresco in Autumn

Friday 22 September

For this nationally coordinated event, we're asking u3as, groups or even individual members to take the fun and learning of u3a outside. This could be organising a special event for your u3a or hosting an outdoor session for your interest group.

If you will be taking part in Alfresco in Autumn, do let us know by emailing u3aweek@u3a.org.uk and we'd love to see your photos after the event.

Also coming in u3a Week....

We'll be launching two new films, in which u3a members and academics join together for a discussion on ageism, positive ageing and how we could move towards a more age-inclusive society. This is part of our ongoing collaborative work with other organisations.
