Ontario providing free training for construction workersThe Ontario government is investing $3.6 million to support three innovative projects to help over 2,200 women and young people across Ontario prepare for meaningful and well-paying careers in the construction trades. Led by the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario (PBCTCO), these free programs will focus on increasing female participation in the industry, providing online training tools and exclusive employment opportunities to jobseekers, and giving grade 12 students a first-hand look at life-changing careers in construction. Ontario launching mobile skilled trades classroomsThe Ontario government is investing $5.4 million to design and build three mobile tech classrooms that will travel across the province and teach students and young people about the skilled trades. The classrooms, built and operated by Skills Ontario, will feature hands-on learning stations and simulators for electrical systems, welding, crane operation, auto-painting, tire and brake work, heavy machinery and more. Ontario training more dairy farmersThe Ontario government is investing over $300,000 to help young people prepare for meaningful and well-paying careers in the dairy industry. In partnership with Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO), the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus’ Dairy Herdsperson Apprenticeship (DHA) program will be expanding to offer a hybrid, distance education option for students who are not able to study in person full-time or are already working on farms around the province. Consultation: Poor outdoor air quality and workplace health and safetyOutdoor air quality in Ontario can vary due to a variety of factors including pollutant emissions. The Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations do not specifically address poor outdoor air quality, but employers have a general duty to take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of a worker. This includes protecting workers from the hazards associated with poor air quality that could pose a risk when working outdoors. The ministry is seeking feedback on whether poor outdoor air quality is an issue for Ontario workplaces, and whether the Act and/or its regulations may need to be changed. Provide feedback |

Consultation: New heat stress regulationDue to changes in our climate, extreme heat events are a growing health risk to workers in Ontario. The ministry is proposing to introduce a stand-alone heat stress regulation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act with specific requirements that would apply to all workplaces to which the Act applies. Webinar: Changes to the regulations for mines and mining plantsNew rules to improve ventilation requirements in underground mines and lower exposure to harmful diesel exhaust to the most protective levels in North America came into effect in July. Long-term exposure to diesel exhaust can be a significant cause of lung cancer in miners. The changes respond to calls from unions for a reduction of how much diesel particulate miners can be exposed to underground and follow recommendations from the Mining Health, Safety and Prevention Review and recent coroner’s inquests. ESA: Safety is ESA's top priorityDid you know that in the past ten years, there were 142 electrical fatalities in Ontario? The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) seeks to reduce the number of fatalities, injuries and incidents in Ontario, but we cannot do it without your help. If electrical work is done by an unlicensed contractor and/or without a certificate of acceptance from ESA, it is non-compliant. IARC: Occupational Exposure as a FirefighterThe International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has released an evaluation on the carcinogenicity of occupational exposure as a firefighter. The working group found that occupational exposure as a firefighter as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) and causes mesothelioma and bladder cancer. They also found limited evidence for cancers of the colon, prostate and testis, and for melanoma of the skin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Read the full study |
