A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN

A Te Atiawa Rugby League jersey now sits proudly in the Te Kotahitanga office as a thanks from the management team. Late last year Te Atiawa Rugby League received $4,500 from our Te Hononga Grants to support a men's and women's team at the Taranaki Whānui Māori League tournament. The grant went towards team registrations, t-shirts, accommodation, kai, physiotherapy and travel costs.

“For Te Atiawa, it provides an opportunity for our many whānau to come together in unison, learn our rich history, learn karakia, waiata, haka, and represent our identity on the field. It provides a space to enhance Te Atiawatanga and connection amongst one another,” says Ngahina Capper, Te Hononga Grant applicant on behalf of Te Atiawa Māori Rugby League.

The final results saw Te Atiawa wāhine winning best haka, second place in their grade with five players named in the wāhine tournament team. Te Atiawa tāne, also won both best haka and their grade, with seven players named in the tāne tournament team. Ka mau te wehi!
