SHAPING THE FUTURE OF LA, TOGETHER

Earlier this year, 12,000 Angelenos cast 83,000 votes for the issues that matter most to them. Then, more than 600 organizations responded with their ideas to impact on those issues. We're in the midst of evaluation now and on September 28th, we'll announce the grant winners.

This is the LA2050 Grants Challenge – grantmaking by LA, for LA.

Below, we're highlighting two of this year’s collaborators and sharing how you can get engaged.
LA2050 YOUTH AMBASSADOR SPOTLIGHT
Wow! Together, our 140 LA2050 Youth Ambassadors engaged more than 3,000 people in LA2050 Grants Challenge voting.

Two of our Youth Ambassadors reached more than 200 voters each. As part of their prize package, they each selected one organization from our LA2050 Ideas Hub to direct a donation of $250. Benjamin M. chose Shoes That Fit and Aaron D. chose Color Compton. We're so impressed with their dedication to uplifting LA!

THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP WITH SJPLA
We’re proud to have Social Justice Partners Los Angeles (SJPLA) facilitate the external evaluation process for the LA2050 Grants Challenge.

Under SJPLA's guidance, teams of social impact leaders review applications and then come together for discussion and shared reflection. This is our fourth year collaborating with SJPLA.

My favorite Los Angeles places and spaces...
PLAY: Skateboarding is a lifelong passion, no matter how many times I forget to practice. Every time I’m ready to re-emerge into the action of practicing my ollies so they morph from tiny jumps to small leaps off the pavement, I head to the Lincoln Park Skatepark. I am determined to land a kickflip here. It is surrounded by fields of grass, tall palm trees, and a lake so you can take a meditative stroll if you’re feeling adventurous. There’s also Plaza de la Raza where you can find art classes for students and a beautiful gallery.

CREATE: When I want to make something, I head to Montana Shop Los Angeles, a paint store on Central Avenue and 6th Street in the Arts District. Though you are not allowed to test the paint inside the store, I absolutely love opening the pages of a book and drawing while surrounded by these beautiful colors, murals, and kind reps.

CONNECT: Community and culture require engagement from all of your senses. Sound is a powerful one for me. I head to Amoeba Music to get lost in the history of other people’s memories hidden in melodies and beats – although it is no longer at the same location, there are still events held there commemorating the history of this gigantic archive of a record store. I love browsing every single genre and looking for rare vinyls, or any new music from local artists.

LEARN: I head to the East Los Angeles College library when I want to experience a plethora of information. I have witnessed the campus grow ever since I was a child because both my parents went there to study and earn their college degrees while raising a family. It feels nostalgic in certain areas while pushing you a bit out of your comfort zone with its massive and new architecture.

LIVE: My favorite resource for anything regarding healthcare or housing is the Community Resource Center in East LA. They offer bilingual services and classes, and act as a hub to ensure you and your family have access to the right healthcare you might need.
