A Call for Applications: EngBio IRC Open Tech Collaborations Seed Fund
As part of our project: Applying Open Tools & Resources: towards Accelerating Engineering Biology Innovation in the Cambridge Cluster, we welcome you to apply for seed fund opportunities. The Engineering Biology IRC Open Tech Collaborations Seed Fund offers up to £2500 to support the further development and impactful application of open technologies in two areas of research:
1. Biomedical sciences
2. Agriculture and sustainability

BIOMAKER MEETUP
3rd Wednesday of Each Month, 7pm-9pm
Cambridge Makespace, 16 Mill Lane
Monthly in-person, informal meetup at the Cambridge Makespace for anyone wanting to repair, design or build lab equipment. Bring your own project to work on (anything involving lab hardware is welcome), take the opportunity to work through Biomaker training with others or join one of the Beneficial Bio community projects.

The iGEM team will give a brief introduction to synthetic biology as well as share details of their project to address harmful microbial biofilms by creating protective biofilms to outcompete pathogenic and corrosive microbes.

Accelerate Science Data Pipelines for Science School
25-26 September
How can researchers design and implement data pipelines for scientific research? Our 'Data Pipelines for Science' School will help scientists to learn how to correctly, efficiently and robustly prepare your datasets for machine learning in your scientific projects. It is for any researcher at the University of Cambridge who works with large datasets in their research and is interested in making the transition to data science-led research, but does not have significant expertise in software or data engineering. EMBL-EBI/University of Cambridge symposium 2023!
21 September 9am-5.30pm
The University of Cambridge and EMBL-EBI are hosting a joint one-day computational biology symposium to explore collaborative research and future opportunities between the two institutions. With an opening address from University Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research Anne Ferguson-Smith and EMBL-EBI Deputy Head of Research Virginie Uhlmann, the symposium will showcase successful current collaborative work and look at new breakthroughs and opportunities in and around the area of computational biology. Attendance is open to anyone at either the University of Cambridge or EMBL-EBI who has registered. All attendees are also welcome to bring a poster to present their work. National Postdoc Appreciation Week on Connect: Health Tech
18 – 22 September, online
Connect: Health Tech is taking part in national postdoc appreciation week, celebrating postdoc’s contribution to academic life and sparking conversations about research culture. This initiative focuses on postdocs from all fields and backgrounds, as well as the academics and staff who support them.
Departments and organisations have been sharing their opportunities for postdocs – from talks and events to funding and jobs, Connect: Health Tech is the central point to check. Members have also shared useful resources such as information around collegiate affiliation, a great way to meet new people and form community. Cambridge Public Health Showcase - 7 November, Old Divinity School
Calling all early career researchers! We are excited to announce an opportunity to display your research at this year’s Cambridge Public Health Showcase. The in-person event will take place on the 7th of November on the topic of ‘Breaking the cycle of Intergenerational Adversity: the role of public health’.
We invite all students and Early Career Researchers from all disciplines to submit an abstract for a poster presentation relating to this wide-ranging topic or public health more generally. The winner of the competition will have a unique opportunity to orally present their research immediately before a key-note speaker, as well as win £150 in book tokens. The best poster will receive £100 in book tokens. Abstracts must be submitted through this form by 5pm on Friday the 22nd of September. More details available here:

AESIS Societal Impact Webinar Series
September
The Network for Advancing and Evaluating the Societal Impact of Science (AESIS Network) is an international, open community for various types of professionals working on stimulating and demonstrating the impact of science on economy, culture and well-being. The network consists of individual and institutional members, and thus connects different stakeholders. The members all work in a variety of organisations from all over the world, where they are involved in the evaluation of impact, research strategy and policy making, funding and other impact support.
