Microscopes for Chaoyang School, Singapore

Chaoyang School, Singapore was gifted 30 handheld microscopes by the Rotary Club Freshwater Bay on 28 August 2023. The school immediately integrated the use of the microscopes into the upper primary science teaching curriculum.

A small group of students had the chance to trial the use of the new learning tool and were fascinated to see the magnified images of organisms such as butterfly legs and goldfish scales.

Teachers were equally excited to include the new teaching and learning tool into their science lessons.  They believe that the microscopes will help students to develop a deeper understanding of science.

The handheld microscopes are a valuable addition to the Chaoyang School Science Department. They will allow students to learn about the microscopic world in greater detail.

The Chaoyang School community would like to thank the Rotary Club Freshwater Bay for exposing a new world of science learning to their students.

Thank you to Freshwater Bay Rotarians Sheila Cheng, LAU Eng Seng, Greg Acciaioli and Nini Toley for attending the event at Chaoyang School on 28th August 2023. More photos of the Microscopes in use are available in a short presentation available on our website.

Greg, Nini, Sheila and Lau also checked on the Buddy Bench previously donated to Chaoyang School.
Thank You from Interplast

Containers for Change Update
As one of our main sources of income for our projects, your assistance in sourcing, collecting, and/or returning containers is greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately, a combination of a lack of commitment in collecting from the Tee Box Cafe and another Rotary club taking containers earmarked for us has meant that they are now going to prioritise giving their containers to two other groups (including the other Rotary Club, now that the Tee Box is aware that the other Rotarian is not from our club). It is vital that any bags they do earmark for us are promptly collected so we don't lose this source of income completely!

Project Coordinator PP Simone Collins can provide information / support:
  • providing bags for you to fill at home (let your neighbours know you are collecting - they may be willing to help you!)
  • assisting with working with the Scouts if you know a workplace / business that is willing to help
  • coordinating a roster to collect from the Tee Box Cafe - if you cannot pick up on a night you had agreed to help, please let us know so someone else can collect the containers instead
So far in 2023/24, we've raised $470.10 from recycling containers.

Government House Open Day - October 28th & 29th

The next Government House Open Day will be the weekend of October 28 & 29. Our club has been asked to put on a Devonshire Tea instead of a sausage sizzle, which will be indoors in the undercroft.

This will be an important fundraising activity, especially with our reduced income from recycling containers. Please keep as much of this weekend as free as you can to help. We will also need family and friends to assist!

More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population.

Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults.

Rotary members make amazing things happen, like:

Opening schools: In Afghanistan, Rotary members opened a girls’ school to break the cycle of poverty and social imbalance.

Teaching adults to read: Rotary members in the United States partnered with ProLiteracy Detroit to recruit and train tutors after a study showed that more than half of the local adult population was functionally illiterate.

New teaching methods: The SOUNS program in South Africa, Puerto Rico and the United States teaches educators how to improve literacy by teaching children to recognize letters by sounds instead of names.

Making schools healthy: Rotarians are providing clean, fresh water to every public school in Lebanon so students can be healthier and get a better education.

Enhancing educational systems: In Kenya, Rotary clubs are working with the Global Partnership for Education and local and national governments to advance life-long learning opportunities for poor and marginalized children.
