TE RURUKU PŪTAKERONGO

Ko Te Kāhui Tupua, he rārangi maunga here ā-nuku, here ā-rangi
Ko Te Kāhui Tupua, Koia ko ō mātou nei okiokinga, ko mātou nei tō rātou okiokitanga

Last Friday about a thousand people gathered at Owae Marae in Waitara to witness the signing of Te Ruruku Pūtakerongo, the collective deed of redress for Taranaki Maunga. This settlement took six years for the Crown and Ngā Iwi o Taranaki to negotiate and settles the last outstanding Treaty of Waitangi claim in the region. The agreement includes a Crown apology, the rights of personhood bestowed on the maunga, and a co-governance model regarding national park management.

Results from the Taranaki Maunga ratification saw 24.24% of our Te Kotaitanga o Te Atiawa registered members vote. From this number, 98% voted Yes. This was in line with the overall voter result. From all eight iwi, the overall voter return was 23.76%. From these votes 97.65% supported the resolution.

Ngā mihinui to our negotiators, ngā iwi o Taranaki Chairs, PSGE kaimahi, kaikōrero, kaikaranga, poi manu, whānaunga participating in our haka powhiri, all ringawera, Manukorihi Pā Trustees and all who worked so hard to make this day special. We encourage you to read and watch the links below to understand the extent of the Deed and to view coverage from the day.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME

Hāpaitia te ara tika pūmau ai te rangatiratanga mō ngā uri whakatipu Ka Uruora!

In mid-August keys to three units on David Street, Westown were officially handed over to their new owners. These whare were previously owned by Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa (Te Kotahitanga), and have been completely refurbished by Ka Uruora. Kaimahi from Ka Uruora have also worked closely with each whānau, from initial financial literacy education through to navigating the process of purchasing a first home. We are so proud of each whānau and look forward to sharing more Ka Uruora and Te Kotahitanga housing opportunities in the near future.

Homeowners: Hamiora McLeod (Te Atiawa), Rangiamohia Bolstad (Ngāruahine), Trent Hohaia (Te Atiawa) and his partner Grace Allen (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Hinemanu, Ngā Wairiki, Ngāti Apa).
