  • 906 Career Day
    • Wednesday, September 6th from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
    • On DHH Lawn
    • Career Services has organized an opportunity for local recruiters to come and talk with students.
    • Some of the recruiters will be looking for Social Sciences majors.
    • A give away of $4,000 dollars worth of campus gift cards will also be available at this event. 
  • MSU Law School Admissions Officer
    • MSU Admissions Officer Kimberly Wilkes will be on campus next week - Thurs Sept 7 from 4-6 pm. 
    • She will be in AOB 201 to meet with students interested in law school.
    • She can talk both about Law School admissions in general and MSU particularly.

  • Faculty "TechTalks"
    • Monday, September 11, from 12:00 - 1 pm.
    • These talks will feature 2-minute faculty presentations focused on their research interests.
    • This will be a great chance to learn more about your professors!
  • Study Away Fair
    • Please join us at the Study Away Fair on Thursday September 14 from 10 am to 2 pm.
    • The fair will be located between the library and the EERC.
    • Many of our study away trips will be represented there.
  • Department Welcome at Hancock Beach
    • Mark your calendars for Friday Sept 15 at 5:30 p.m.
    •  The Forge Food Truck will be serving us again, however this time we will also have some vegetarian options available. 
    • This event is a great opportunity to meet all the new students in the department. 
    • We will have some games, volleyball, and lots to drink. 
    •  If you need a ride to Hancock Beach, please send a short note to Chris at csflood@mtu.edu and we will ensure you get a ride.

  • Career Fair
    • The MTU career fair will be held September 19th from 12-5 p.m. at the SDC, all social science students are encouraged to attend.
    • A number of state department's will be in attendance looking for students in the social sciences! 
    • Be sure to look in Handshake for internships and permanent positions they are hiring for in advance of the career fair.
  • Manoomin Rice Camp
    • 9 am- 4pm Saturday, September 30th
    • Please consider attending this hands-on educational event to learn more about wild rice processing.
    • The event will be held in L'Anse at the KBIC Teaching Center.
  • Law Club Weekly meetings: Mondays at 6:00pm in Library 103 (Starting Sept 11. 2023). Contact Johannah Greene if interested Jhmcneil@mtu.edu
  • The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) is gathering support and donations to host a powwow on November 4, 2023 at the Gates Tennis Center. 
    • Please consider attending this powwow or otherwise supporting by making a donation.
    • If you are interested in becoming a member of AISES contact aises-l@mtu.edu or reach out to Robert Hazen.
Jobs and Other Opportunities
Undergrad:
  • Student Ambassadors
    • The Social Sciences Department is hiring 5 students this year — preferably one to represent each major.
    • Students will work about 35-45 hours total throughout the year at $15/hour.
    • Please send a resume and letter of interest to Dr. Sarah Fayen Scarlett by September 8. at sfscarle@mtu.edu.
  • American Historical Association Conference 
    • Interested in presenting at the American Historical Association 137th annual conference in San Francisco?
    • The conference will be held January 4th-7th, 2024.
    • A lightning round session as well as poster presentation are available for undergraduates.
    • Don't forget the department offers the Developmental Mini Grant to help fund these kinds of opportunities.
  • Michigan Space Grant Consortium (MSGC) Grants and Fellowships
    • MSGC aims to foster awareness of education in and research on communities in Michigan. 
    • Research may occur over the summer, during the academic year, or both.
    • Deadlines:
      • October 18, 2023 by  Noon — All other submissions.
      • November 8, 2023 by Noon — Internal deadline for undergraduate and graduate fellowship proposals.
      • November 15, 2023 by 5 pm — Final materials, after review and approval by SPO, must be uploaded to MSGC by the applicant.
Grad Positions:
  • Michigan Space Grant Consortium (MSGC) Grants and Fellowships

    • The Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance is hiring for a full-time Research Associate hybrid position in Atlanta Georgia.
    • Research will focus on how "climate change policy impacts people and the energy sector."
    • A bachelor's degree is required, and a master's degree is preferred.
