                      President's Message

Hello everyone and welcome back! We hope that you thoroughly enjoyed the great summer weather and that you are ready for the 2023-24 school year.

Our first official September function was Labour Day in the Park hosted by the Sudbury & District Labour Council. Despite the record-breaking temperatures, there were many visitors at our booth and several back-to-school pencil cases filled with items were handed out to children in attendance. Thank you to PSSP President Dan Watson and District Officer Katrina Ross who were instrumental during the day and engaged with attendees.

As was outlined in the member emails on September 1st, there are several meetings this month that will give members a chance to hear details of the bargaining pathway agreement. It is imperative that members inform themselves ahead of a province-wide online membership vote on this proposal. Members should plan to attend one of the four virtual OSSTF Town Halls to hear details for the first time. Everyone should be attending the in-person meeting in Sudbury with OSSTF Provincial representatives present to ask questions, hear various perspectives, and for your voices to be heard. Once again here are the dates:

Virtual Town Halls

Thursday September 7th, 6:15 pm.

Monday September 11th, 11:00 am and again at 6:30 pm.

Saturday September 23rd, 1:00 pm

District 3 Mass Member Meeting

Monday September 18th, 6:00 pm at the Northbury Hotel & Conference Centre, 50 Brady St.

Lastly, we want to encourage everyone to consider joining the ranks of our more active members within our Federation. Through our many committees and councils, it is an opportunity to make connections with various community groups and charitable organizations, to help raise their profile and that of OSSTF District 3, and to assist these groups for the benefits of our local community. Please speak with your staff rep or reach out directly to us at the District Office for more information.

We hope that your September start-up is a good one and we hope to see you soon.

Regards,
Eric Laberge
District President

                   District Officer's Message
I want to welcome everyone back for another school year. Hopefully your summer was filled with joy and relaxation. I spent much of my summer indulging in what I consider self-care. Some might not consider picking blueberries an activity that fits that bill, but I love it. Maybe I’m weird. I also spent time in my kayak. Nothing beats the sights and sounds of nature. Surround me with loons and chipmunks and I’m in heaven. I am officially recharged and ready to get to work.

This is my second year in the D3 office, and I have been told that I cannot use the excuse that I am new anymore. Dang it! The pressure is on. I feel up to the challenge though.

With that said, I just want to recap some of the services offered to our members.

Compassionate Care Leave (Family Caregiver, Family Medical or Critical Illness Leave): If you need time off to care for a loved one, these leaves are available to you according to the Employment Standards Act.

Pregnancy/Parental Leave: These leaves are also available to employees. There are steps you need to take prior to taking this leave. Get informed and be prepared.

Benevolent Council: If you find yourself in dire financial straits as a result of prolonged illness, accident or extreme emergency, you can apply to receive a grant of up to $3000.

Mediation Services: Before a dispute with a co-worker becomes unmanageable or puts you at risk of receiving discipline, explore mediation as an avenue to a more harmonious working environment.

Sick Leave: Members receive 11 days at 100% pay, followed by 120 days at 90% pay. These days are pro-rated based on FTE. You may be required to provide supporting medical documentation to access this leave.

Women’s Advocate: If you are facing violence or abuse in your relationship, are experiencing sexual harassment in the workplace or need the help of community resources, the women’s advocate may be able to help. Call: 249-879-8730

Of course, you can give the office a call at any time if you need member representation, have questions about the collective agreement or would like more information about how to get involved.

Have a great school year!

Katrina Ross,
District Officer.

OSSTF D3 Events

June was a busy month for OSSTF member activities - here are some of the highlights.

ESSU Bargaining Unit Stephanie Daoust and her executive held a Paint Night at the D3 Office on June 8th.

This event was hosted by Indigenous artist Jessica Somers of Focal Point Artistry.
As we painted this bear on live edge wood, Jessica shared stories of how she learned to embrace her culture through art.

On June 9th, ESSU President, Dan Watson and his executive held a dinner for their members at the Daventry Kitchen & Bar on Regent Street.  Dinner was followed by 2 hours of virtual golf, also at the Daventry.  Eric, Katrina, and myself, were also invited to join this event.

Earlier that same day, the CPAC Committee held a Ponders & Potations gathering for all members of OSSTF, at the Trevi Restaurant on Lasalle Blvd.   The door prize ($100.00 LCBO Gift Certificate) was won by Steph Daoust.
The Communications & Political Action Committee  (CPAC) will be holding more of these events throughout the year - be sure to join us at the next one !
The CPAC committee is always looking for new members - ask your school rep how you can join.

Summer Stuff...

Saturday, July 15th, the District President, Eric Laberge; District Officer, Katrina Ross; PSSP President, Dan Watson; and D3 Equity & Human  Rights Committee members Andrew Kendall and Vanessa Caddel, attended the Pride Day in the Park. It was a rainy day, but the event was well attended, with many activities in support of 2SLGBTQ.
