Saturday Salon -  we offer an artful conversation monthly. We come together to bond, network, and get out of our heads for a little while. It is a conversation, a support group, and sometimes a counseling session. But it is always a great networking event. The topic for September is: DIY catalogs.

Email Karen Schifman with questions or suggestions for future Salons.

Artist Talk - We absolutely love having our artist talks on the third Thursday of every month. This month will be Eva Montealegre on September 21, 2023 at 7:00 pm on Zoom

Eva Montealegre’ s painting career emerged under the tutelage of abstract painter, Robert Kingston, at Pierce College where she graduated with honors in Graphic Arts. Since, her work has exhibited widely at many California galleries including Adagio Gallery on El Paseo Drive in Palm Dessert, Blue Bird Art House, Modern Art Gallery on Wilshire Boulevard and in 2023 at the Planetary Art Exhibit at the Kuiper Space Building in Tucson, Arizona. She is a recipient of much recognition including a certificate of excellence from the Mayor of West Hollywood 2023 and the Puffin Foundation Grant in 2014. In 2015 she was included in the prestigious Latina Art Initiative founded by Linda Vallejo. She continues to challenge the medium with her sculptural palette knife and mixed-media paintings featuring the animal/human psyche from its inner depths to the outer reaches of the cosmos. Her range of ancient ancestral vocabulary to modern day theories often includes cave drawings and scientific diagrams. It's a juxtaposed narrative in her quest to pierce the mysteries of our collective psyche.

Talk Title: Walk the Talk, Work the Show

A gratifying art career is the quest. Meaningful work is the core aspect of the artist's life. Showing the work, working the show, and making the sale are the added benefits. How to make all that work for you.
We'd love to have you participate in our artist talks. Send an email to socalwomenscaucus@gmail.com and let us know which month you are available.
Beverly Hills Art Show on the historic Beverly Gardens Park 9455 N Santa Monica Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA 90210 along Santa Monica Boulevard on October 21-22. The Artists Perspective is a juried member only show. Note: there is a small window for submissions with the deadline of Wednesday, September 13 at 11:59pm. For the prospectus and submission visit Entrythingy

Shape and form are two of the basic elements of art. By definition, shape is an enclosed area of space, form is a three-dimensional shape. Simple enough, until an individual becomes involved. An artist transforms these simple geometric or organic building blocks into something artistic and lyrical. Using creativity, an artist can transform simple shapes and forms into a profound work of art. The addition of color can further define shape and form. How does color, shape and form define your garden, and your art? The Sturt Haaga Gallery at Descanso Gardens invites you to submit your masterpiece to Shape+Form, an open juried competition and exhibition. We are looking for unique ways shape and form depict a garden. Works can include other elements, but the subject of the work should focus on botanical components. Special consideration will be given by the jurors to works that depict Descanso Gardens.

IN THE GALLERIES
Craft in America presents an exhibition of the wonderful California Fibers organization. This historic group is at the cutting edge of fiber art today. Working with a myriad of techniques and materials, including weaving, quilting, embroidery, and basketry. Artists included:
Sandy Abrams, Olivia Batchelder, Charlotte Bird, Ashley V. Blalock, Carrie Burckle,  Marilyn Mckenzie Chaffee • Ben Cuevas • Doshi • Polly Jacobs Giacchina  Lydia Tjioe Hall (pictured above), Susan Henry, Annette Heully, Anifaye Korngute, Kathy Nida, Marty O,  Liz Oliver,  Michael F. Rohde, Rebecca Smith, Cameron Taylor-Brown, Elise Vazelakis, Debra Weiss, Peggy Wiedemann, and Aneesa Shami Zizzo.

Emma Webster: Intermission is the upcoming exhibition at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery. “Emma Webster paints landscapes that are not landscapes. Her work fuses high technology with traditional painting techniques. Her studio is a fascinating combination of a computer lab and a Renaissance artist’s atelier. She has invented a process that fuses hand drawing, virtual reality and sculptural models to generate her images. The resulting compositions are then meticulously hand painted onto canvas with astonishing virtuosity.” (JD)

Runs September 8 thru October 21, 2023

Also at Jeffrey Deitch is Vanessa Beecroft: Rules of Non-Engagement. “As an art student at Milan’s Brera Academy in the early 1990s, Beecroft realized that the nude models in her life drawing class were more interesting than her own drawings. That insight led to her unique fusion of painting, performance and sculpture…Beecroft’s work has shaped performance art, the representation of the female body and socio-political discourse in art. Her performances often highlight the tensions between nakedness and clothing, constraint and freedom, the collective and the individual and human strength and weakness. Beecroft’s work has transcended the art world and has entered popular culture, influencing fashion, film and musical performance.” (JD)

Runs September 8 thru October 21, 2023

parrasch heijnen gallery presents dream song, the gallery’s first solo exhibition with NY-based artist Ellen Siebers. Siebers work is abstract yet she “memorializes the immediacy of beauty in vignettes of daily life… Siebers gives breath to the temporal phenomena of her subjects with fluid compositions on panel. Any distinction between sight and impression is blurred by the artist’s languid brushstrokes. Intimately scaled yet uninhibited, the works capture a quality of lightness held within a fleeting moment.” (ph)

Runs thru October 7, 2023

Hauser & Wirth, West Hollywood is exhibiting a solo exhibition of new works by Jenny Holzer. Ready for You When You Are. Known for thought-provoking and politically charged works that span mediums including painting, sculpture, light projection and installation, Holzer’s focus has always been about the use of language as she challenges viewers’ preconceived notions and encourages them to question the systems and structures that shape our society. This exhibition will feature recent paintings and curse tablets, as well as three kinetic displays – further testaments to her ability to push the boundaries of contemporary art.

Runs September 1 thru October 21, 2023

Later this month at Orange Coast College’s Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion will be an exhibition that examines the serious side of humor, Seriously: Humor for Challenging Times is curated by artists Suvan Geer, Maryrose C. Mendoza and Sandra Mueller.

Nine local artists: Margaret Adachi, Lalo Alcaraz, Michelle Andrade, Mark Steven Greenfield, Beth Grossman, Sandra Low, Manny Orozco, Naida Osline and Elyse Pignolet provide their own versions of satire, irony and parody in these difficult times.
Preview reception: Thursday, September 28, 5:00 –7:00 pm including artist-tours from 1:00 – 2:30 pm. Additional tours [TBD] Admission is free for all exhibitions. Gallery hours: Tuesday to Thursday, 11:00 am until 5:00 p.m., and First Saturdays (October. 7 and November 4), from 12:00 - 4:00 pm. The gallery is closed on Fridays and school holidays.

Runs September 25 thru November 30
Opening reception: Saturday, September 30, 2023 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm
IN THE MUSEUMS
The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine presents Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson: Infinite Space, Sublime Horizons. Jónsson creates exquisite large-scale paintings on a loom, in a practice that blurs the boundaries between painting and weaving, fine art and craft. Her work veers between abstraction and representation, with deep connections to Iceland’s otherworldly landscapes. The exhibit will include her largest and most labor-intensive paintings, alongside smaller paintings, drawings, and watercolors.

Runs thru September 10, 2023
At the California African American Museum, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, whose new series of portraits of Black Angelenos is wheat-pasted across CAAM’s monumental atrium walls. Fazlalizadeh’s social practice is rooted in Black feminism. She is especially known for her 2012 public art series Stop Telling Women to Smile, in which she took on gender-based street harassment, confronting the vernacular of the catcall via direct, unwavering, closed-lip portraits of women in Brooklyn
Alice Neel: Feels Like Home, continues at the Orange County Museum of Art. Thru October 22, 2023.

And Women Defining Women in Contemporary Art of the Middle East and Beyond continues at LACMA.

SCWCA's  Position on Equality
SCWCA’s mission is to create community through art, education, and social activism. Hate and bigotry have no place in our organization. We condemn these racist, violent acts in the strongest possible terms and encourage our members to do so as well. We stand in solidarity with all those who suffer from fear, harassment, and violence.

Part of our mission as an organization is activism, so we stand with the Black Lives Matter and Stop AAPI Hate movements because we believe that all humans are connected.
