In the Field Newsletter August 2023

August 2023

Welcome to the latest news from the In The Field blog. Without power supply, even the best national research and education network (NREN) will not be of much use. In many countries, constant power supply cannot be taken for granted. South Africa’s network TENET works with its member institutions to mitigate the consequences of scheduled power-outages, while in Uganda, RENU is engaged in bridging the digital divide through introduction of solar-powered internet routers. FEATURED STORIES

South Africa: coping during power outages

Load-shedding is the South African term for scheduled, rolling electricity outages. Installation of monitoring devices allows TENET, the country’s NREN, to distinguish between real breakdowns in its network, and load-shedding. Thereby resources can be allocated where they are most in need, to the benefit of the R&E community.

Bridging the digital divide in Uganda

RENU, the NREN of Uganda, has partnered up with industry to introduce solar-powered internet routers. Unlike current WiFi connectivity solutions, the solar-powered routers will not require cabling or dependency on unstable power supplies. Not least for rural areas, this will be a huge benefit.

ICYMI: Helping a community stay connected after record floods

When floods inundated the city of Lismore Australia, Southern Cross University became a hub for the town, using NREN AARNet to provide connectivity for recovery efforts.

Forecasting glacier outburst floods

In Iceland, glacier outburst floods pose a hazard to settled areas as well as to roads and other infrastructure. So far, the floods have been very difficult to predict. The Icelandic Meteorological Office and CSC, the NREN of Finland, use supercomputing to change the scene.

Extending the reach of eduroam to more airports

eduroam – the free Wi-Fi roaming service for the international research and education community – is available at more than 30 airports around the globe, with new deployments at airports in Bangladesh and South Africa among the latest, thanks to partnerships with NRENs.

ICYMI: Space tech assists environmental efforts in the Arab region

Movement of sand dunes frequently threatens road safety and agriculture across the Arab region. Based on satellite data, travelers can be advised to take alternative routes, and farmers to protect their crops in due time. 12 research centers in the region are involved with ENSTINET, the NREN of Egypt, in a key role.
