SEPTEMBER 2023

Making Highgate a Better Place to Live and Work
NEWS
Townsend Yard success

It looks like emergency access is being provided to the rear of 36A Highgate High Street, which has been part of our long running campaign. If so, it will be thanks to your donations, the petition and the massive amounts of time and effort put in by the Society planning team and others. Thank you. For more details click here.
New Archway Road licensing application

We review all licensing applications in Highgate and make representations where necessary but always aiming to support a balance between residents and business. We were concerned to find an application for a licence for 171 Archway Road for the sale of takeaway hot food until 3am on Sunday to Thursday and until 5.00am on Fridays and Saturdays.

These very late hours seemed at risk of resulting in noisy delivery mopeds coming and going through the night and the drivers congregating outside or in nearby Cromwell Avenue. We were also concerned about the potential cooking odours and noise from ventilation equipment. Consequently we made objections to the proposal and attended a hearing in late August.

We were successful in achieving more limited licensed operating hours only until 2am on Sunday to Thursday and until 3am on Friday and Saturday. Counter service is only licensed until 00.30 on Sunday to Thursday and 02.30am on Friday and Saturday. The later closing to 2am and 3am is for deliveries only.  Importantly there were some strict conditions imposed including that "Residents are not caused nuisance or disturbed by any delivery service providers, drivers do not congregate on residential roads.”

Unlike a planning decision, a licence need not result in anything permanent. Licence holders who do not comply with conditions or who do not comply with the statutory licensing objectives can have their licences revoked. Those objectives are: the prevention of crime and disorder; public safety; the prevention of public nuisance; and the protection of children from harm.
Tidying up and guerrilla gardening

The Community Projects group has two great events coming up in September.  First it has its normal tidy-up event. Please meet at the junction of Wood Lane and Queens Wood Road on Saturday 2nd September at 9:30am for the tidy-up session in Queens Wood for an hour.

The group then has a guerrilla gardening event in Pond Square. Please meet at 2:30pm on Saturday 16th September for the 90 minute gardening event.  The group goes to 10A South Grove afterwards (about 4pm) for tea and cake and a follow-up discussion on guerrilla gardening events.

Details of both events are here.

As advance notice we will have a guerrilla gardening discussion evening in 10A South Grove on 3rd November at 730pm. Please put the date in your diaries now!
