Welcome to the AGM edition of St Kilda Cycling Club's newsletter!
First and foremost, on behalf of the club (and self!), I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the outgoing committee for their dedication and hard work over the past twelve months. Your efforts and support have been instrumental in driving the club forward, and I am immensely grateful for your contributions. We've had a difficult time with natural attrition and unforeseen issues whittling our numbers down, but I think we can be proud of what we've achieved. (there's a lot more details in the main body of this email!)
Reflecting on the past year, it's reassuring to note that it hasn't been tumultuous, and after recent times, I think that's a positive sign in itself. In many ways, your committee should be like football umpires - when their presence goes unnoticed, it's a testament to their effective work behind the scenes.
Membership numbers have remained mercifully stable, and we are rightly super proud of our 42% female members figure.
We've enjoyed another successful but unsatisfyingly short crit season and received positive feedback on our twilight A-grade crit. Club members have competed locally, nationally, and internationally, garnering acclaim and upholding our club's fine racing tradition.
On the financial front, we managed to halve the club fee while importantly maintaining our stable financial situation. A significant overhaul of our training and social rides has been welcomed - if numbers are a good guide! Our Bright weekends away have consistently sold out, and the numbers for Will's weekend 'nongs rides have been exceptional.
With help from a cast of thousands we pulled off a successful and fun Tour de France night, and I hope to see more regular events in the coming year, both low-key and not-so-low-key.
Behind the scenes, I've been working away - with the invaluable assistance of our Infrastructure Committee - on a complex and involved plan that has consumed much of my time and thoughts during my tenure. I look forward to sharing more details about this in due course!
I would also like to acknowledge Alison Raaymakers, who is stepping down from the committee after countless roles, hours, and... phone calls to new members. People like Alison are the lifeblood of our club, and her absence from the committee will certainly be felt. While she may be stepping down, I'm pleased to share that Alison will continue to be part of the club, extending her valuable support and enjoying making those calls to new members.
To all our club members, I extend my deepest gratitude for your support over the past year. Here's to the continued success of the mighty SKCC - together, we are indeed SKCC!
As we look ahead, we have an election tonight, and I'm excited to see the composition of the new board for the upcoming 23/24 season and wish you all a terrific year with SKCC.

All The Club Things
SKCC trophy race
The annual SKCC trophy race is back and in 2023, will be held on Saturday 16 September. This time we’re moving the race to the Pastoria Course near Kyneton. You can see a link to the course here. This is part of the Northern Combine Racing Series that you can find on EntryBoss and is the race that we put on for the year (hence the name).
We’re looking for volunteers, racers and anyone who just wants to come up for the day. If you’re interested in racing, entries will open one week prior to the event and are hoped to be a graded race (pending numbers). We are looking for volunteers to help on the day and show off SKCC.
In addition, there is a planned recce ride of the course (plus with the option of extras afterwards) for anyone that wants to check it out. More details on TeamApp but let’s meet in Kyneton at 9am on Sunday 20 th August for a roll around the course. Take the train or drive and we can make a day out in the Macedon Ranges..!
Survey results
Earlier this year, we sent out a survey asking members to fill it in. The key theme we wanted to investigate were the rides that people like doing both during the week and on weekends. Thanks to everyone who filled it in as the data is very useful and will influence what we offer our members as both the scheduled rides as well as the ad-hoc rides we’ve been trialling over the last couple of months.
See the results here.
Weekday rides
We have been trialing a couple of additional weekday rides – the hump day heroes and the People’s Champ rides. These have now settled and found their niche within the ride schedule. Whilst these were set up as trial rides, they have proved to be very popular. So thank you to everyone that has come along and given them a go. Given their popularity we are looking at keeping them going for a while longer and they’re likely to become key features of the regular ride schedule.
While we’re adding rides to the ride schedule, the existing rides are going to be continuing. We are not looking at curtailing them over winter. From time to time, some will get affected by the weather but in the main, they will be continuing. So get that winter kit out and jump on one of the rides.
Thank you to all our ride leaders who brave the elements to continue these rides going!!
Weekend rides
We’ve seen the results in the surveys and we’re slowly adding weekend rides to the schedule. Will Gielewski is organising a ride to the Nongs on the first Sunday of each month. Guin Cleminson has commenced rides for the Bicycle Network ATB training rides. There are also other ride leaders that are planning for regular rides. So look out for the weekly ride schedule sent out on Sunday nights as well as TeamApp for more information on rides coming up.
Regular ride schedule.
People have asked to get a copy of the ride schedule as well as the level at which each ride is patched. You can find a link here to that schedule.
Nominating to become a ride leader
Given we’re looking at organising more rides – especially for weekends, we’re looking out for members who would be interested in becoming ride leaders. We would provide you with all the training required to become a ride leader and would pair you up with our more experienced ride leaders so that you’ll have plenty of support and encouragement along the way. If this is of interest to you- then get in touch.
Joining the training sub-committee
If you have been enjoying the changes we’ve been making this year or have ideas for improving what we offer then why not join the training sub-committee? We’re always looking for new members to help drive what we’re doing. The commitment is not high and also gives you opportunities to get your training qualifications too.
Ride leaders and ride guide
Finally, we have been busy putting together key documents for both the riders as well as the ride leaders. Anything you want to know whilst on the road can be found in this document. It is intended to be an easy go-to guide for all things riding with SKCC. This document is in its final stages and we will release it to the wider club membership shortly...
