August Yard of the Month

Congratulations to Beth and Tom Barlow at 2226 Lincoln St. for being selected as August's Yard of the Month (YOM) winners!

Beth and Tom have added updated landscape lighting to match their house, planter boxes and hanging baskets that are changed out seasonally, Loropetalums to replace cast iron plants on the south side, and various bedding plants and flowers to the beds in front and back.

A big thank you to Image 360 for providing us with beautiful YOM signage and to Gardner's Outpost for providing all winners of Elmwood Park's YOM a gift certificate to use at their store on Franklin St. in Cottontown. We appreciate your support!

The Elmwood Park YOM Committee is in search of new members! If you’re interested in helping to nominate and select winners each month, please email Dave Barbeau.

Porch Parties

Thank you to Curiosity Coffee for hosting our August Porch Party. We had a great turnout and are thrilled about the new patio!

Interested in hosting a porch party?

Email board@historicelmwoodpark.org with your name, address and preferred month. The parties are potluck; hosts need only provide whatever food and drink they'd like, a place for people to gather, and (preferably) restroom access. We'll connect you with our Porch Party Captain, Bart Tittle, to help with coordination.

Gardener’s Outpost Tip of the Month

Everyone's itching for fall festivities! But the question is, when do you start planting your cool weathered annuals?
  • Snapdragons can take more heat than other cool weathered annuals. You can start planting Snapdragons now and they will bloom until frost.
  • Decorative kale and cabbage need cooler weather, so hold off until temperatures are consistently in the mid-80s.
  • Mums' flowers will fade fast in the heat but will last much longer in cooler temperatures. Deadheading mums extends their blooming season. Start planting mums when temperatures are consistently in the mid-80s.
  • When looking for unique plants to add to your cool weathered planters, consider adding ornamental peppers or shop the vegetable starts for plants like swiss chard and purple cabbage!
Need help or have questions? Visit Gardener’s Outpost at 1211 Franklin Street!
