DUT DEAF CENTRE WORKS TOWARDS DUT BEING A PREFERED TERTIARY INSTITUTION FOR STUDENTS WITH HEARING IMPEDIMENTS

With the start of Deaf Awareness Month on Friday, 01 September 2023, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Deaf Centre, which resides in the Department of Information Systems, is working on transforming DUT to be the preferred tertiary institution for students with hearing impediments.

According to Petri Du Toit, the Deaf Progamme Coordinator at the Deaf Centre, the recent officialisation of South African Sign Language has encouraged the Centre to develop programmes that will attract more Deaf students to enrol at DUT. The DUT Deaf Centre plans to continue to provide its expertise at the policy level to the benefit of the South African Deaf community.

DUT WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP CELEBRATED DUT WOMEN IN STYLE AND CLASS

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) women in leadership, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operation, Dr Vuyo Mthethwa and Technology, Transfer and Innovation (TTI) Director: Professor Keolebogile Motaung hosted DUT women to two stylish events in commemoration of women’s month.

Women at the Durban Campuses were celebrated at Sibaya Casino on Thursday 10 August 2023, while Midlands Campuses women were celebrated at Brahman Hills on Wednesday 16 August 2023.

DUT RESEARCH CO-ORDINATOR IS A TOP 3 FINALIST IN THE HERS-SA HIGHER EDUCATION WOMEN LEADERS AWARDS

Research Co-ordinator in the Faculty of Arts and Design at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Dr Dianna Moodley was recently announced as a Top 3 finalist in the Higher Education Resource Services – South Africa (HERS-SA) Higher Education Women Leaders Awards. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held in Cape Town on Thursday, 07 September 2023.

Dr Moodley’s role at DUT includes; strategic leadership, management, supervision and decision-making in all research-related academic and administrative matters within the Faculty of Arts and Design.

STUDENT RECRUITMENT HOSTS A SUCCESSFUL PRINCIPAL AND LIFE ORIENTATION EDUCATOR BREAKFAST SEMINAR

The highly anticipated 2023 Principal and Life Orientation (LO) Educator Breakfast Seminar, which is hosted annually by the Durban University of Technology (DUT), took place at the Golden Horse Hotel in Pietermaritzburg, on Thursday, 24 August  2023.

The DUT Principal and Life Orientation Educator Breakfast Seminar was aimed for schools across the province from all 12 districts of which the majority came from uMgungundlovu. This prestigious event was hosted by the University’s student recruitment department at the Corporate Affairs.

DUT HOSTS SPECTACULAR TALENT SHOW AT SASTRI COLLEGE

Sterling talents from various schools in Durban were showcased at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2023 Talent Show, hosted by the DUT School Engagement Project in partnership with Cooperative Education, at Sastri College Main Hall on Saturday, 26 August 2023.

The Talent Show was attended by DUT staff, students, teachers, parents and learners from neighbouring schools. The School Engagement Project has six partner schools: Durban Girls Secondary, Sastri College, Hunt Road Secondary, Overport Secondary, Sparks Estate Secondary and Bechet High.

INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL SHORT-COURSE STUDENTS VISITED EDU BEARS PLAY CENTRE AND PRESCHOOL FOR THEIR HANDWASHING PROJECT

Durban University of Technology (DUT) Department of Nursing’s Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Short Course students visited Edu Bears Play Centre and Preschool on Wednesday, 23 August 2023 to teach children about the importance of hand washing. 

The Infection Prevention and Control Short Course is under the supervision of Dr Nellie Naranjee. The short course is run on a Project Based Learning Approach. One of the projects identified is the lack of hand washing as a contributor to the resurgence of childhood diseases. Hence, the group chose a preschool to teach children the importance of hand washing.
