What is in Your Blind Spot?

Dear Reader

What is in your blind spot and who's going to tell you? Who's going to have the trust and the fortitude and the vulnerability to spill the beans?

One of the exercises we do during the annual of every EOS client I serve, is the 'Johari Window'. In this exercise we, as a leadership team, have to tell each other what we know about them, that we think they don't know about themselves. We call that the 'Blind Spot'.

This is an incredibly powerful exercise and it builds trust in the team, because it shows vulnerability, and through the vulnerability the trust grows.

I always love to see, especially when there's a very powerful and inspirational leader, especially when it's a leader that the team loves and supports, how gradually we peel back the layers of the onion, until we come to the inside. I just love it when we start sharing with each other what the one thing is they want you to do more of, and what's the one thing they want you to stop doing. Because in there, there's something - like the thing that they want you to stop doing, your blind spot can be there.

If you're a vulnerable leader, and I've seen it countless times, the vulnerable leaders are open to this, they learn from this and every exercise like this, they celebrate and they go forward and become stronger. Because as people unpack blind spots for each other, we all know how we can be better together as a team. And if I'm in a leadership position, if I'm in a position of power, if I tell the rest that I want to know what's in my blind spots so that I can be better, guess what? The rest of the leadership team follows and they can teach that skill to their teams as well, and that makes all of us stronger as we go forward.

So the beautiful thing in these exercises is to see who's actually stepping up to the plate; which leaders open the door, and which of the team members then walk through that door, into a place of vulnerability, more trust and a lot of progress. Because the team gets stronger, the trust grows and these blind spots are eliminated.

If you want to know more about the Johari Window exercise, or how to discover more about your blind spot and the blind spots of your team, speak to me and I'll gladly tell you more.

Have a fantastic week.
