Important Sector Information

Police Information Checks

Lethbridge residents will soon have added convenience for volunteers to access their Police Information Checks. The Lethbridge Police Service estimates an online system should be available within the next 1-2 months.   The option for people to decide if they prefer to apply virtually or in person is an advantage and provides more flexibility for those interested in volunteering their time in our community.   To say that Volunteer Lethbridge is looking forward to seeing how this online system rolls out is an understatement!  For its approximate 100 member organizations, VL offers a volunteer screening service, which can include a Police Information Check.  “Over the last year, Volunteer Lethbridge has assisted hundreds of volunteers to obtain their Police Information checks so they can move successfully into our local nonprofit organizations," says Amanda Jensen, Executive Director of Volunteer Lethbridge.  “Any streamlining to this process will undoubtedly increase the number of successful placements we make. This could be very good for our City.”   The flexibility for volunteers will also benefit non profit organizations.   “I think this service will decrease barriers. This could result in more volunteerism in the community which would be amazing. It will be great. There obviously is lots of logistics, but at the end of the day it is a really good thing for volunteerism,” says Jen Visser, Executive Director at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lethbridge and District.   Please keep an eye on upcoming issues of The Non-Profit Builder for more information as it arrives.
Alberta welcomes 25 new cabinet ministers and 38 critics in the official opposition.

As much as we’d all love to go to the beach and forget about the news for a while, there is a lot happening right now that will impact our sector. The climate crisis is intensifying, with its impacts making themselves known on a weekly basis. Although Parliament is on break for the summer, nonprofits engaged in advocacy and policy work should be thinking about what an upcoming federal election means for their work. Finally, a new study shows that nonprofit organizations led by Black and Indigenous people and those from other underrepresented groups are doing much more to advance EDI than white-led organizations.

“When employers make time for their workforce to pursue passion projects and provide support both inside and outside the office, it reinforces their value and helps avoid isolation and burnout. Given the high proportion of workers who indicate that their mental health negatively impacts their work productivity, support for volunteering is valued now more than ever.”
