Words from Father Ed

Congratulations to all for the great turn out last Saturday for the brainstorming session. As promised, included here are the many very thoughtful and motivating ideas and suggestions for spending our money wisely and for doing more to welcome more members into the congregation.
The vestry will study the ideas and strive to bring them to fruition as we plan for the autumn and 2024.

The appeal for the ReStart bins was wonderfully answered. You gave $725 which paid for all four of the bins we had on display plus another one. Thank you! We will store bins here at St. Patrick’s, ready to give them out if a disaster happens. Someone will thank us for our caring action.

Congratulations also for your attendance on Sunday, to experience the Love Choir and respond again generously to the appeal for Maui. Your gifts totaled $1,245! Thank you all! Special thanks to Leslie Clark and Wendy Wood for the Hawaiian theme and the leis.

Finally, we also celebrated a delicious and well organized Parish Picnic, thanks to the organizers, Margaret Merchat, Hutch Gibb, and Kate Aldrich. And special thanks to all who jumped in enthusiastically to help in the kitchen and outside at the grill and the tables, and most importantly for all who brought all the delicious food.

The experience of those two days demonstrated the great spirit that is St. Patrick’s. With God’s help we can look forward to many more celebrations of fellowship, good healthy fun and meaningful worship.

See you all on Sunday!

Blessings,
Father Ed

A Message From Your Senior Warden

Dear fellow parishioners,

Things are happening around St. Patrick's!

As we move forward into the fall season, a "Pledge Campaign Luncheon" is planned for Sunday Oct. 22nd, during which we will hear from the Stewardship Committee @ pledging our support for 2024.

At the ANNUAL MEETING in January 2024, there will be an election of several new Vestry members, as SIX members will have completed their terms by the end of this year, including Jackie Senter, Sarah Phillips, Sandy Keith, Marilyn Ganz, Merle Holtzen, all of whom were elected in 2021. Leslie Clark will have completed Ann Schneider's term. Chuck Wood, Wendy Wood and Minerva Haddad will remain.

Due to many factors, the usual rotation of choosing three new members each year has been disrupted. There will be a difference in the length of the terms served by the six new members as follows: Three will be elected to serve 3 years; two will be elected to serve 2 years; one will be elected to serve 1 year.

If you are interested in serving on the Vestry, please contact Jackie Senter, Sr. Warden or Father Ed Howell.

Thank you for your attention and for showing your love of St. Patrick's!

Blessings and God's peace to all,

Jackie Senter, Sr. Warden

Blessing Bags
August News

Our August contributions of Blessing Bags to Redwood Gospel Mission came to 18 bags.
Our next deadline for September is the second Sunday of the month, September 10.  You can deliver them to our home at 8399 Oakmont Dr. on or before Sept. 10 or bring them to church and place them in the basket near the windows in the narthex.  There is a list of ingredients for the Blessing bags in that basket and you can call me for more information.  I’m happy to answer your questions about this important ministry.
One of the most wonderful things about this ministry is that for about $35 dollars I can provide a meal for 8 hungry homeless people.  Please consider participating.
Another approach is for two or more people to buy the ingredients for 8 bags, then get together to bag them: A nice addition to a friendly cup of coffee among members of our congregation.
Let’s fill that basket with lots of Blessing Bags by Sept. 10!  Betsy Randolph (408)981-2024

The Friedrich Small Grant Fund

This fund was initiated in 2002 with a $30,000 gift from Gene and Marjorie Friedrich. Only the income from the gift can be used and grants are limited to $500 per qualified and approved applicant.  To be compliant with the terms of the gift, the Vestry –at its recent July meeting-- approved a policy/procedure document, an application form and appointed three people to the implementation committee (Margaret Merchat, Leslie Clark and Hutch Gibb). The purpose of the grant program is to assist individuals as they work to reach economic/work related goals. Grants can be used for a very wide variety of costs such as training, education, supplies, clothing for an interview, transportation, license fees, tools, child care needs --- just to name a few. Anyone can apply—so if you or someone you know of might be interested, please have them contact the church office to request a copy of the policy and application. The policy and application form provide more information on eligibility criteria. The appointed committee will be sending out letters to community organizations to inform them of the grant program as well. Applications will be reviewed and acted upon generally within a month of receipt. The amount of money available to allocated will depend on earnings in the prior year plus any income from prior years not allocated. For 2023, dependent on further budget information, it appears that we have approximately $1500 in total to award.  If you have any questions about the program—please contact Margaret Merchat.

Planned Giving

A Message from the Planned Giving Ministry

Preparing an estate plan is good Christian stewardship –

saying thanks to God, expressing your love and concern

for family and showing charity toward others.

Choir Returns to Rehearsal

Choir will have its first rehearsal on Thursday, August 17th from 6:30 to 8:00 in the Sanctuary. The first choir Sunday singing at service will be Sunday, September 10th. We are returning a bit earlier to get a few more weeks of practice in, so we can start our Holiday Concert rehearsing earlier than last year!

We invite anyone who is interested in singing with us to come check out a rehearsal throughout our first few weeks of practice to see if it is for you!

We particularly encourage male voices, which would even out our choir!

If you have any questions, please contact Mark Kratz or Doug Richardson.

Food Bank Distribution!
Greetings Friends! Check out Eleanor's thankful note to her volunteers from Monday, August 28th. The team will return again on September 11th.

Dear All,

Thank you to Joel/Anna, Ned, Beth, driver Tomi, and rep Arturo.  I cannot find the tiny piece of paper I wrote the stats on, but I remember that 52 families and think that 180? individuals received food tonight!  Mother Nature provided shade from St Pat's trees and breeze from God to offset the heat while folks came through 4:45 - 6:00 p.m.

Thank you to the mystery person who left a sack of potatoes and one very large head of cauliflower on the front bench.  Should someone want to leave a food donation in the future, please leave it in the shade!  The potatoes and cauliflower were almost ready to serve!

Arturo returned very little food to REFB.  He reminded me that come November, he will have been with us 3 years!  He continues to be such a blessing to our volunteers and REFB clients!

Using the tune of "Happy Birthday" we presented a wedding card and cash gift to Arturo and bride, Megan, singing "Happy Wedding to you!"  Kinda corny, but sung with a lot of heart, it was ok!  Already trained to be a good husband, he took the unopened envelope to wife, Megan!!

Volunteers scheduled for Sept 11 are Pam/Larry, Carolyn W, and Barbara S.  Please let me know ASAP if your plans change.

Eleanor
