A News Source for Friends of Duke Urology  •  Summer 2023
Note from the Department Chair

The transition from Division of Urology within the Department of Surgery to a free-standing Department has been both exciting and challenging.  One of the most visible changes has been the revamping of our website.

I want to thank Michael Gowan and his team at Gowan Communications who were instrumental in the design and layout of the website.  I also wish to thank all the faculty and staff who contributed to the educational content.  I honestly believe it’s a great reflection of both our guiding principles, mission and vision of Duke Urology.

I invite you all to explore our new Department of Urology website https://urology.duke.edu/

Our goal is to ensure that the website remains Informative and current.  If after reviewing the website you have any suggestions which you feel should be included on the site, please feel free to email me at gary.faerber@duke.edu

I was attending a departmental chair dinner last month and one of the chairs from another department came up to me and wanted to let me know how impressed one of his faculty was with the urologic consult care one of their patients received recently.  Specifically, what was mentioned was the timeliness of the urologic care, as well as the respect shown to the care team and the patient.  What was also impressive to my chair colleague was that this care was delivered over a long holiday weekend.  I believe the care provided by us demonstrated dependability, a degree of loyalty to the consulting team and their patient, as well as respect.  These attributes are often attributed to Integrity, the first of our Departments guiding principles.  I would like us to be recognized as being the most responsive, respectful, thorough, and collaborative department within the Duke Health system.  My wholehearted congratulations to the residents and consulting urology faculty involved.

It’s my pleasure to introduce our last of 6 new faculty who have joined us this year.  Dr. Michael Rothberg will be joining our oncology team here on the Durham campus.  He received his Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering from Georgia Tech, completed his medical school training at New York Medical College and then completed his urologic residency training at Wake Forest.  Michael then completed a urologic oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute of the NIH.  I am extremely excited to have this young, energetic, and inquisitive cohort of faculty join us!

Dr. Michael Rothberg

AUA-EAU EXCHANGE PROGRAM - VISIT TO DUKE UROLOGY 6-10 MAY 2023
Duke Urology was proud to be one of three American urology programs to be selected to host Europe’s rising star academic urologists this past Spring. The AUA-EAU Exchange program has been an annual event since 1994 surrounding both the AUA and the European Association of Urology (EAU) annual meetings.  Rising Star young urologists are selected for this prestigious 3-week exchange experience.   Our guests included Dr. Iulia Andras, Assistant Professor, Municipal Clinical Hospital Cluj-Napoca, Cluj, Romania; Dr. Karl Kowalewski, University of Heidelberg, Germany and Dr. Giancarlo Marra, University of Turin, Italy.
Aside from observing surgery, attending rounds and participating in an Oncology Journal Club, Duke Urology showed our guests the very best of Duke University, Durham and North Carolina. Among the social highlights were Moulin Rouge Broadway show at Durham Performing Arts Center, an axe throwing party and a special dinner at the iconic Angus Barn in Raleigh. The three visiting urologic surgeons were also given a VIP Tour of our amazing campus including visits to Duke Basketball Hall of Fame at Cameron Indoor Stadium and the Nasher Museum of Art.  Three Duke faculty members Drs Judd Moul, Brant Inman and Mike Abern led the event as local hosts and viewed it as a “give-back” since they had all participated as AUA Scholars in past exchange programs to Europe.
(L-R): Brent Nosé, Judd Moul, Brant Inman, Gincarlo Marra, Iulia Andras, Rand Wilcox Vandenberg, Mike Abern, Dominic Grimberg, and Karl Kowalewski
