Welcome to the DDP Quarterly Bulletin -- the DDP's newsletter.
Here are some of our updates for this quarter:

DDP DAYS

The DDP Days took place on 4-6 July team. IDDRI hosted around 50 colleagues from partnering institutions, including from many in-country research teams and from different international partners to the DDP network featuring, among other things, discussions how to best render the DDP network for increased climate ambition at national and international level.

An IMAGINE project workshop was organised back-to-back with the DDP Days to discuss the first rounds of scenario results from the participating in-country research teams (Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa) and collective discussions on how to leverage common policy messages across teams at the international level.

AFRICA CLIMATE WEEK

Africa Climate Week happened this week between 4-6 September in Kenya. The DDP published a report entitled, "Status Quo Analysis on African engagement and perspectives on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Global Stocktake", a report about the engagement of African countries in the first Global Stocktake. INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENT


Sectoral Transformations - Shipping and Mobility:
  • Yann Briand participated at the Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships (ISWG-GHG 15) last June at the International Maritime Organisation in London, which prepared the negotiations of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80) about the 2023 revision of the IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships.
  • In the perspective of the UNFCCC's Global Stocktake, Iddri - DDP and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) organised a closed Indo-EU sectoral conversation gathering key high-level experts from both regions to discuss barriers and enablers for the development of smaller and lighter vehicles in their socio-economic and institutional policy context and start identifying key international cooperation areas.

Sectoral Transformations - Green Iron:
  • Third Sectorial Conversation on Industry took place on 16 May, hosted by VUB under NDC Aspects with participation of key experts and industry representatives. There was a wide participation from DDP Partners, notably to discuss developments in South Africa and India iron and steel sector decarbonization.

International governance - Influencing outcomes at the Global Stocktake:
  • Marta Torres Gunfaus and Johannes Svensson participated in the UNFCCC SB58 Bonn Climate Change Conference in June 2023 in the context of the Third GST Technical Dialogue and the public launch of IDDRI African GST initiative.
  • Johannes Svensson and Jesse Burton from ESRG presented collective work carried out in the IMAGINE project on the barriers to finance of priority transformations in Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa at the side-event titled Keeping 1.5 Alive: emissions data, pathways and implementation enablers at the SB58 conference in Bonn on 14 June.
     
Others:
  • The DDP participated in the 2050 Pathways Platform Annual Meeting in Bonn last June 2023
  • The DDP was invited to Rockefeller Foundation gathering of key experts to co-design "African Energy Futures Initiative", a multi-donor concept to address the lack of robust local ecosystems for energy systems analysis and transition planning in most African countries 
  • A Consortium Project Meeting for NDC Aspects was hosted by IDDRI in Paris with participation of several DDP Partners

COUNTRY ENGAGEMENT

UPDATES FROM BRAZIL


  • Professor Emilio Lebre La Rovere was invited to speak at the 50th Anniversary of the Centre International de Recherche sur l'Environnement et le Développement (CIRED) held between 29 - 31 March in Paris, France.
  • Several Chatham House meetings were held with representants of the new elected government on 3-4 April and 11 May in Brasília to discuss relevant issues such as Agriculture, stockbreeding and feeding systems;  Deforestation; Power Supply; Carbon Market; Governance and the Brazilian NDC.
  • The Centro Clima team participated with other members of the civil society sector on behalf of the Climate and Development Initiative. There were between 30-40 participants at each meeting.
  • Centro Clima presented the main results of the Decarboost and DDP BIICS projects at the National Bank of Development (BNDES in its Portuguese acronym) event: “Technological trajectories and macro modeling”, held on 15 June in Rio de Janeiro. There were about 50 participants at the event which was also transmitted online.
  • In August Centro Clima sent a list of recommendations to the Federal Government Council that is working on the Law Project that will create the Brazilian System of Carbon Market (SBCE in its Portuguese acronym). The recommendations are based on the main findings of the PMR Brazil (World Bank), Decarboost and the Climate and Development Initiative studies.  

UPDATES FROM INDIA

  • IIM Ahmedabad held a policy discussion on "Transitioning towards a Green Hydrogen Economy for Net Zero 2070" with key stakeholders and policy-makers of the State of Gujarat on 13 July.
  • IIM Ahmedabad has been actively engaging in G20 Presidency’s work, notably with the Sustainable Finance Working Group.
  • IIM Ahmedabad conducted a workshop on the topic "How can we operationalise equity in the GST debate?" with CEEW and IDDRI in New Delhi. You can watch the event here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIK_K05n838
  • Prof. Amit Garg was a nominee for IPCC AR7 WG3 Co-Chair.

  UPDATES FROM NIGERIA

  • Nigeria's Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategy 2060 was consolidated thanks to inputs from DDP Nigeria team

  UPDATES FROM SENEGAL 

  • ENDA, together with national stakeholders involved in the initiative to co-construct a low-emission and climate-resilient development strategy, and supported by the DDP team at IDDRI, played a key role in enabling the Senegalese JETP announced on 23 June by organising a process to define a long-term vision for the national transition and providing important input to the JETP negotiations. 
  • A group for modelling has been started in the initiative in Senegal to lead the work on the quantification of the long-term climate and development vision that is being elaborated in the project. This core group will be in frequent contact with the larger thematic working groups developing the scenario narratives, and will be working alongside other stakeholders in the project to produce low-GHG and resilient development pathways in the coming year.

  UPDATES FROM SOUTH AFRICA  

  • Hilton Trollip became IDDRI Research Associate to closely collaborate on international strategy to promote developing countries' needs for industrial decarbonization
  • A technical discussion between the DG Clima and the South African delegation of the European Commission and ESRG at University of Cape Town was organised online on May 30, to discuss scenario results and emerging policy messages from the ESRG team's work in the IMAGINE project.
