Autumn Season Fun

We'll let you in on a secret...

Just ask any local: September is one of the finest months to be in beautiful Sandpoint, Idaho. With typically warm temperatures, huge Lake Pend Oreille is still splendid for swimming, boating and beaching it. Up in our mountains, hikers and bikers find splendid solitude. And in town you'll find a mecca of fun events.

It kicks off with one of the biggest happenings of the year, the Sept. 1-4 Fall Fest at Schweitzer, with live music, mountain activities, food and libations including fine regional wines and some 80 beers and ciders from Northwest breweries. Then hop on your bike and gear up (or down) for two signature bike events: The five-day WaCanId bike tour into Canada Sept. 11-16, or the all-local Monarch Grind, a 70-mile gravel gran fondo Sept. 16. Runners can challenge themselves in the 5k  Find Your Strength Fun Run on Sept. 23

That's just the haps outside; inside are concerts, live dance and theater, a studio tour and more.

The splendors of Sandpoint's 'secret' season

Summer's grand finale gives way to the first breaths of autumn

As summer wanes and fall just gets under way, September brings the best of both seasons in northern Idaho. With warm temperatures early, magnificent Lake Pend Oreille and its many waterways (like Sand Creek, above) offer the full breadth of swimming, paddling, sailing, motorboating, fishing and just hanging amid the beauty. In the high country of the surrounding Selkirk and Cabinet mountain ranges, the bugs have abated and fewer people are on the trails – making this arguably the finest time for alpine explorations. Want in on the secret? Sandpoint is simply splendid in September.
