Don't miss your chance to join our upcoming Engagement Academy!

Don't forget that applications to join our upcoming Engagement Academy will close at midnight on Friday 15 September!

Open to all Imperial staff, the Engagement Academy (externally accredited by the Institute of Leadership) will help develop your engagement practice, building your confidence, leadership skills, and connections with colleagues across Imperial.

The aim of the Academy, with monthly training sessions over the course of seven months, is to foster the development of a community of staff for whom societal engagement is an integral, supported, and valued part of their professional identity and practice.
"Make sure to join the Engagement Academy – it’s been a remarkable learning experience... Each day is jam-packed, focusing on a key topic of engagement, leaving you inspired and motivated to kick off your own engagement project."
Find out more and get information on how to apply (if you have any questions or queries, you can contact the team at societal_engagement@imperial.ac.uk).

Imperial Lates returning soon

We will be announcing a brand new season of discovery, where visitors can experience the wonder of science and explore cutting-edge research through talks, artistic workshops and live demos, to the public very soon.

The season will begin on Thursday 9 November exploring the theme of Food. The team are on the look out for ideas on food-related research (from the effects of climate change on agriculture to digestion and the microbiome), as well as how you might explore research using food as a tool (for example, a chocolate workshop looking at geometrical shapes).

If any of your work could fit this theme, submit ideas (whether fully formed or in early stages) through our call out form. You can submit ideas for any of the events, but don't miss the deadline for Imperial Lates: Food, which is Thursday 21 September!

Engagement Day 2023 - save the date!

Join us for Engagement Day on Wednesday 29 November to discuss youth-centred public engagement. How can we meaningfully and equitably involve young voices in our work, shaping society and bringing about change? Hear from inspiring speakers, meet like-minded colleagues and take time to discuss key issues and opportunities in engaging with young people.

Keep an eye out for registration – opening soon!

We are delighted to announce our keynote speaker: Professor Louise Archer!
A leading researcher in social justice within science education, Louise and her team developed the concept of ‘science capital’ to understand why some young people feel that science is ‘for them’ and others do not.

Louise’s work focuses on identity, inequality and equitable participation with STEM in and out of school. Louise is the Karl Mannheim Professor of Sociology of Education at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society, and Principal Investigator on a number of large national and international projects including ASPIRES, a 13-year longitudinal study tracking the science attitudes and career aspirations of young people aged 10-23 in England.

Junior hackathon inspires young girls

Staff members and students from across Imperial departments helped to organise Hello World Hack, where they planned and delivered nine hands-on coding, programming and maths-based problem-solving activities for girls aged 7-10. Each activity was led and supported by scientists and mathematicians who identify as women, enabling young girls to meet positive female role models across STEM.

Read more about the successful event (supported by Imperial’s Societal Engagement Seed Fund), which helped to build confidence and remove negative stereotypes around computing and maths.

Event: Communicating your research

Join Imperial’s Communications Division for Communicating your research on Monday 11 September at 12pm to hear about how they can help share your research and expertise with wider audiences!

The session will share some exciting recent projects and give you tips on how to develop your own social media presence as well as how to collaborate with the Communications team and journalists to share your work. You’ll hear from other Imperial researchers about what it’s like to work with the media, how communicating their work helped them, and why they recommend sharing your research too.

This event is open to Imperial staff and PhD students, with lunch provided after the talks (as well as the option to join virtually). Find out more information and sign up!

Take part in the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition

Watch highlights from the 2023 Summer Science Exhibition

The Royal Society is looking for researchers to take part in next year's Summer Science Exhibition, their annual festival celebrating the cutting-edge of UK science. Taking place in July 2024, the Exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to engage a variety of audiences with your research, including members of the public, school groups, policy makers and potential funders and fellows of the Royal Society.

Applications can be made individually or in a collaboration led by a senior researcher based in the UK. Join an online session on Tuesday 5 September (12 – 1pm) if you are interested in taking part in 2024. Find out how to apply or read case studies from previous exhibitors to find out about their experiences.

The deadline for proposals is 3pm on Monday 2 October.

Community groups receive free air sensors

As part of the Breathe London Community Programme, 20 more community groups will have the opportunity to measure air quality in their local area, with assistance from Imperial researchers. Participants for this round include local business groups, residents' associations, youth clubs, parents’ groups and a performing arts academy.

The programme, which is delivered by researchers from Imperial’s Environmental Research Group with support from The Social Innovation Partnership, aims to reach groups with a passion for improving air quality, particularly those in areas facing higher exposure to harmful pollution and less access to green spaces.

Learn more about the programme and these latest groups, who will be empowered to generate their own local evidence on the impacts of air pollution.

Spotlight on: Making Waves

The National Heart and Lung Institute have been sharing stories of staff and students who are making an impact and inspiring our communities through their Making Waves campaign.

The founding premise of the project was for anyone to look at these portraits and see themselves, so that everyone can know they are welcome, and that they belong in science and at NHLI.

Have a read of these wonderful stories, wherein each person featured is asked to choose three objects to represent who they are or what they believe is important.
Check out the following resources that may help with how you engage with public participants or support any engagement activities and collaborations you are planning!
