Dear Friends,
This week I have been sick and have watched entirely too much television. As you are all aware, there has been one story that has dominated the news cycle this week down in Atlanta, and I have been disheartened by outright ugliness of the commentary on both sides of the political spectrum. As we enter into another election cycle, which, promises to be just as ugly, if not worse, than the last, let us remember our calling as Christians. We are called to stand up against injustice wherever we see it, but we must remember that these are systems of injustice that are deeply embedded into our American society. But we are called, first and foremost, to love one another - even those we disagree with, even those we may consider an enemy. Let us be careful to not blur the lines between individual people and systems in which they participate. Let us always call out systems of injustice, but let us always love those people who are a part of that system and pray that they have the courage and will to recognize their complicity and then to effect change. We must never demonize people in our quest to be faithful and just, for then we run the risk of thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought. We are all being challenged to recognize the systems of injustice that we are a part of, knowingly or not, and our complicity in those in those systems. Only then might we go about the work of bearing Christ's light in the world. Please pray for each other and for our nation during these next 14 months. May God watch over us, guide our thoughts and speech, and bless our nation and the world.
Grace and peace,
Fr. Jeremy

Support the Hawai'i Fire Response:
High winds from Hurricane Dora and drought conditions combined to accelerate the growth of brush fires that devastated the Lahaina community in Hawaiʻi. Episcopal Relief & Development is in contact with the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaiʻi in the wake of wildfires that have killed many people and displaced hundreds of families on Maui. They are calling on churches to help support the response. Please consider making a donation by visiting episcopalrelief.org or my making checks payable to:
St. John the Evangelist.
Write Hawai'i Fire Response in memo line.

We would like to gather a group of strong people after church this Sunday to move a couch from the education wing to the dumpster. Please call or text Anne Edwards at (708)305-2648, if you are willing to help. We won't try unless there are at least 4 people available.

We are always looking for more helping hands to keep this outreach program up and running.
Volunteers meet just once a month, on the last Sunday of each month, and work collectively to shop, assemble, pack, and delivery food to individuals and families in need.
The main goal of the Family Food Share ministry is to assist food-insecure families in the Bloom Trail High School district.
