Travel Restriction Lifted - Thanking the Heroes 👩‍🚒🔥

This week, I had a wonderful time at the annual Member's Birthday Celebration Event at Bonsor Recreation Centre, hosted by the Burnaby Senior Chinese Society.

The members showcased their talents in Chinese instruments, traditional dance, and choral performances, I was truly captivated! Connecting with so many familiar faces in the community was heartwarming and engaging. Big thanks to the organizers and volunteers who made the event possible!

This year is the 11th Ethiopian Summer Festival held at Burnaby Edmond’s Park.

The festival strengthens community identity and showcases many different artists and businesses, in addition to provides opportunities to learn, appreciate, and be proud of Ethiopian cultural heritage.

Many thanks to all members of the Ethiopian Community Association of BC (ECA BC) for their hard work in organizing this festive event.

Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:

Wildfire Heroes - Column by MLA Sandhu

Wildfire fighters, volunteers, and emergency responders have been working around the clock to fight wildfires and keep us safe.

Local Governments and First Nations have played a huge role also in making sure that people get the information and resources they need, especially when it comes to evacuation alerts and orders.

British Columbians stand together in hard times, and I know that we will support each other through this challenge too.

Expanded graduate scholarship funding will support students

Increased scholarship funding will support graduate students during their studies and prepare them for in-demand careers.

Financial barriers should not prevent students from pursuing careers they’re passionate about.

These scholarships reinforce how important it is to train people for current and future jobs in our rapidly growing clean economy.

Emergency Support Services available for wildfire evacuees

The province is providing support to evacuees across B.C. who require assistance through Emergency Support Services (ESS), such as accommodation, food, clothing and other incidentals.

People who require support services should follow directions provided by their local authority or First Nation about how to register for ESS.

BC PharmaCare now covers new drugs for rare diseases

People in B.C. will benefit from BC PharmaCare’s new coverage of medications used to treat rare diseases

Effective Aug. 18, 2023, the oral formulation of edaravone which works to slow the loss of physical functions in ALS patients, will be added to the PharmaCare formulary as a limited-coverage benefit.

In the first year of implementation, it is expected as many as 100 patients in B.C. will be eligible.
