As MVAA enters the fall season of events and concerts, it's important to acknowledge our generous sponsors. Student of the Month: Spencer Anderson
|
|
|
Meet Spencer Anderson, a 15-year-old 10th grader hailing from Belle Vernon. Not only is he an esteemed member of the BV Marching Band and the MVAA Reg’t Fife and Drum Unit, but he has also claimed a spot in the prestigious PMEA Dist. 1 East Jr. High Honors Band. Adding to his accomplishments, Spencer has recently auditioned for and earned the position of Aux. Drummer and Percussionist in the esteemed 2023 TC Jr. Band. Balancing his academic responsibilities with his musical pursuits, Spencer has been diligently honing his skills through private music lessons and under the guidance of his BV band Director, Mr. Mark Surovchak. Keep an eye out for Spencer as he confidently paves his way to the pinnacle of his musical journey.

"You, Me, & Harry": A Celebration of Harry Chapin
|
|
Mon Valley Academy for the Arts is proud to announce an intimate and emotionally charged performance by Mon Valley native Lou Antonucci, titled "You, Me, & Harry," celebrating the timeless story-songs of legendary singer-songwriter Harry Chapin. The solo performance will take place at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center in Brownsville on Wednesday, September 13, at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for a memorable evening of music and storytelling.
Harry Chapin, known for his poignant and socially conscious songs, left a lasting impact on music and philanthropy. Some of his most famous songs, such as "Cat's in the Cradle," "Taxi," and "W.O.L.D," continue to resonate with audiences across generations. With his captivating delivery, Lou Antonucci pays homage to Chapin's unique storytelling style, forging an intimate bond with the audience reminiscent of a Harry Chapin performance.
"We are thrilled to host Lou Antonucci's moving tribute to the incredible legacy of Harry Chapin," says Annette Buffer, President of Mon Valley Academy for the Arts. "Lou's performance brings back the essence of Chapin's storytelling, captivating the audience with every song. It's an event not to be missed."
Tickets for this performance are priced at $15, and seating is limited. To guarantee a seat, pre-registration is available by calling 724-561-5616. Attendees may bring a beverage of their choice; however, cups and ice will not be available. Light refreshments will be provided. Don't miss this rare opportunity to experience the music of Harry Chapin through Lou Antonucci's heartfelt interpretation.
In the spirit of Harry Chapin's dedication to ending hunger, Mon Valley Academy for the Arts will collect donations for St. Peter's Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Brownsville Food Bank at the door on the day of the show. The organization believes that access to nutritious food is a fundamental human right and aims to make a difference in the local community. Attendees are invited to contribute non-perishable food items to support this meaningful cause.

Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Afterschool Program
|
|
Prepare for a transformational journey of peace and self-discovery as the Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Afterschool Program, led by certified Kids’ Yoga teacher Stephanie Kishel, opens its doors to children aged 5-12. This exciting program is designed to guide kids through the enchanting worlds of yoga, meditation, and mindfulness using the magic of music and games. The program is set to kick off on September 5th, 2023, offering two weekly sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center (MVAA South) in Brownsville.
These classes will immerse kids in yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, fostering a sense of peace, self-awareness, and confidence in their everyday lives.
The Kids’ Yoga & Mindfulness Afterschool Program is specially curated to ignite a sense of wonder and exploration in children. Through a combination of interactive music and games, kids will embark on an adventure to discover their inner selves while having loads of fun. Each class is a unique blend of movement, creativity, and relaxation, making it an ideal space for children to unwind and connect with their emotions.
Annette Buffer, President of Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA), expressed her enthusiasm for the program. She stated, "The Kids’ Yoga & Mindfulness Afterschool Program offers a unique opportunity for children to cultivate self-awareness and emotional well-being in a joyful and interactive environment. I wholeheartedly encourage parents to enroll their children and witness the positive impact it can have."
Stephanie Kishel is a certified Kids' Yoga teacher, Reiki practitioner, and dedicated business owner. As a mother of two and a paraprofessional at an elementary school, Stephanie recognized the need for mindfulness and peace in children's lives. Her passion for yoga and meditation led her to become a kids' yoga teacher with a mission to instill these powerful practices in young minds. When she's not guiding children on their journey to mindfulness, Stephanie enjoys outdoor adventures, gardening, reading, and crafting plant-based recipes.
Kids ages 5-12 will have fun learning & practicing yoga, meditation, & mindfulness through music & games. Classes held Tues/Thurs from 4-5 p.m. at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center. $15 per class. Sam Bill Legacy Band & Mon Valley Marching Unit

The Sam Bill Legacy Band graced the stage at Brownsville Community Day, leaving the audience in awe of their exceptional performances. The TC Jr. Stage Band stood out at Brownsville Community Day, impressing with their remarkable musical talents. Their adept performance and captivating presentation defined the band's appearance.
Auditions for the band took place successfully in late August, drawing in skilled individuals eager to join this musical collective. The band's pursuit of excellence is evident through their regular rehearsals, held each Sunday afternoon at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center in Brownsville.
MVAA CEO Mark Smith acknowledged the band's musical abilities, stating, "The talent and musical prowess displayed by the TC Jr. Stage Band are commendable. Their Brownsville Community Day performance reflected their dedication to their craft."
Smith also extended gratitude to directors Ron Spang and Dale Hertrick for their effective leadership and generous investment of time. VoiceZ on Fire Show Choir

The MVAA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization that offers an eclectic array of programming and events, including musical instruction, art exhibits, a free summer concert series, and the opportunity for youth in grades 7-12 to perform with the Twin Coaches Junior Stage Band. The mission of the MVAA is to provide arts and cultural programs and activities to the Mon Valley and beyond that informs, entertains and engages this community and the region in lifelong learning and cultural experiences for all ages. The MVAA is operated by an all volunteer board of directors, with each member bringing their unique talents and experiences to help the organization to grow and thrive. The MVAA is funded by individual donations, grants, and corporate sponsors, and maintains a virtual storefront where they sell musical equipment that has been donated to the organization.
