Archway Campus - Plan B details awaited
Readers will recall the plans for the Archway Campus site at the bottom of Highgate Hill, which included a 32 storey tower. The developer Seven Capital responded to comments and objections by reducing slightly the height of the tower to 28 storeys. However, interestingly there is now a second alternative for the site which does not include the tower. It delivers slightly less housing, but does so without including the tower. This revised alternative is known as Plan B, while the original scheme, with the slightly shorter tower is known as Plan A. For more on this story click here
Townsend Yard
Our campaign on Townsend Yard has made some progress. Last month we reported that we saw a passageway beginning to take shape to provide emergency fire access to 36A Highgate High Street. It was a small win, but a win nevertheless. Seehere.
The developer has belatedly submitted a planning application for the changes involved in constructing this passageway. We are now campaigning to make sure that as a minimum there is access to that passageway for emergency use by the resident of 36A as well as by the fire brigade. It’s not much use otherwise. Amazingly this aspect is not covered in the developer's application.

Traffic management consultation
Camden is consulting about changes to traffic in the Dartmouth Park area particularly Chetwynd Road. The aim is to create a healthier environment where it's safer to walk and cycle. Details of the proposals and an opportunity to provide comments are here. You can also register for an online public meeting on Tuesday 3 October and two in-person events on Thursday 12 October and Thursday 2 November.
We will be wanting to understand the risks of diversion of east - west traffic via Highgate West Hill, Swains Lane, Chester Road or Magdala Avenue and see how these risks will be managed. Although the consultation is designated as relating to Dartmouth Park the map shows the whole Camden area of Highgate up to and including Pond Square and Highgate High Street, as well as the Islington area west of Highgate Hill. It is important that members make comments that apply anywhere across this area.
Saving our trees
Insurers are prone to claim that trees close to buildings are a risk and on that basis to refuse or limit cover. Where there are no good reasons we deplore the loss of trees in our urban environment.
The Highgate Society has been successful in persuading Haringey to refuse an application to fell a mature and attractive monkey puzzle tree in a front garden in Southwood Avenue. The evidence did not establish that any present damage had been caused by the tree. This followed a previous unsuccessful application to fell in 2008, refused on grounds that removal would be detrimental to the visual amenity of the area. Haringey has confirmed that the tree will be protected in future by a tree preservation order (TPO) as we requested.
Christmas lights in the Village - donations needed
Highgate Village Christmas lights are only possible by way of kind donations from residents, shopkeepers, other businesses, advertisers and sponsors. The lights are organised by a voluntary committee of local tradespeople collectively known as Highgate Festive Events, a non-profit organisation. Once again, this year they need to raise funds to make the Highgate Village Christmas lights possible and are asking for any kindcontributions to support this much-loved annual tradition.
To donate visit www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/jameswy-wilkinson or scan the QR code above. Cash donations may be made in collection boxes at Winkworths Estate Agents, Pricket & Ellis or Taylor Gibbs, all in the High Street.
What's your view?
Should a lime tree in Waterlow Park be reduced in height to preserve the London skyline? Or should it be left to grow? How important do you think it is to see the dome of St Paul’s? The Friends of Waterlow Park are carrying out a consultation. Read more here and let them know your view.
The photo shows a simulation of the view from a revised viewpoint and the tree pruned.
