Register for Engagement Day!

Registration is now open for Engagement Day 2023!

Taking place on Wednesday 29 November, this year's Engagement Day will focus on youth-centred public engagement. Through a range of talks and workshops, we will be asking how we can meaningfully and equitably involve young voices in our work, shaping society and bringing about change?

Network with a wide range of like-minded colleagues, discuss key issues and opportunities around engaging with young people and hear inspiring presentations - including from our keynote speaker: Professor Louise Archer!

Louise is the Karl Mannheim Professor of Sociology of Education at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society, and Principal Investigator on a number of large national and international projects around science capital, youth equity in STEM and a 13-year longitudinal study tracking the science attitudes and career aspirations of young people.

Take part in the Great Exhibition Road Festival 2024

The proposals process for the 2024 Great Exhibition Road Festival will be opening on Friday 6 October (and closing on Sunday 5 November).

Building on what was the largest Festival so far (celebrating awe and wonder, with over 50,000 visitors in attendance) we want to contribute to an even better festival next year. This starts by collecting Imperial proposals for a brand-new programme of talks, workshops, live demos and performances that open up dialogue around our research in creative and engaging ways.

Keep your eyes peeled for the proposal form in the next staff briefing, where will we also publish further information on how to apply, detail the support and guidance available to you, as well as reveal next year's festival theme!

Expand your public engagement expertise with our masterclasses

Our masterclasses are returning for the new academic year! From developing core engagement skills to exploring participatory research, discover the right tools to engage your audiences effectively.

Open to all Imperial staff and doctoral students, we recommend completing our core engagement masterclass before joining the other workshops (unless you have previous engagement experience at Imperial or elsewhere). Please contact us with any questions.

Core Engagement Masterclass:

This session covers why engagement is so important, explores approaches to quality engagement and discusses the many opportunities for public engagement at Imperial and beyond.

Further training:
This skills-focused workshop looks at the key to effective communication, presentation, and messaging, relevant across engagement formats, and will help you to tailor engagement to different audiences or contexts.
This session covers what research funders are looking for and how engaging the wider public can be a pathway to many potential impacts and applications of research.
Join us to discover a wide range of online tools and platforms, explore the merits and limitations of digital engagement, and discuss the key considerations when engaging with audiences online.
Discover the benefits of participatory research and how to approach it effectively. Explore power dynamics and how to build trust, ensuring all participants feel able to participate in the process.

Looking back at GERF 2023: Can we take your breath away

At this year's Great Exhibition Road Festival, researchers from the Margaret Turner Warwick Centre, and volunteers from the charity Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis, developed an activity that gave visitors the chance to walk in the shoes of someone living with pulmonary fibrosis.

Members of the public were challenged to fill up a pair of animated lungs by pedaling on three stationary bikes. While the bikes initially appeared identical, each increased in difficulty from first to last, mimicking how it would feel to have normal, mild or severe fibrotic lungs.

Find out more and hear from pulomary fibrosis patient, Andy, about what it’s like to live with the condition.

Recruiting the 2024 Young Producers

Recruitment for the next Young Producers cohort is currently open (with a deadline of 16 October).

The Young Producers are a group of 18-24 year-olds from the local areas of Hammersmith and Fulham or the City of Westminster. They work with Imperial researchers and external artists to create an installation combining art and science for Imperial Lates and the Great Exhibition Road Festival. This year's cohort created 'Fighting Bac', an interactive installation exploring the dangers of antimicrobial resistance!

If you know anyone who might be interested, you can download our flyer or share our posts on Twitter/X or Instagram

Inspiring the next generation of doctors

The Undergraduate Primary Care Education Unit (via the Department of Primary Care and Public Health) was invited to a local school to support their ‘science week’ and inspire pupils to consider healthcare careers. They designed an interactive, half-day workshop for children aged 10-11 on the subject of ‘Healthy Hearts’. Students explored 3D heart models, saw demonstrations on blood flow and circulatory systems, and role-played scenarios involving patients visiting the GP with heart attack symptoms.

Read more about the value they found in sharing their passion for medicine with the young students and providing positive perspectives on being a doctor in today’s NHS.

Join the Science Actually podcast team

The Data Science Institute is looking for enthusiastic staff and students to form the team for Season 3 of the Science Actually Podcast. Each episode features interviews with Imperial experts to uncover answers to common questions across the most intriguing and cutting-edge topics in science.

"Getting involved in Science Actually is a great opportunity to try something new and to make new friends and connections at Imperial along the way. If you have relevant experience then great, but if not don’t worry, the most important thing is a willingness to learn!" - Gemma Ralton, Data Science Institute

Staff should fill this form to apply, and share this link to any student they think might be interested! If you have any questions, you can email dsi_comms@imperial.ac.uk.

In the news: Groundbreaking indoor air pollution study launched in London

The Evening Standard has published an article on the WellHome project, London's first community-based indoor air pollution study developed by researchers at Imperial.

Imperial have already visited and installed sensors in more than 56 homes as part of the project and expect to sample more than 100 homes by April 2024, with results from the study published by the end of next year.

Read the news article to find out more about the study and its potential impacts, particularly on those between the ages of 5 and 10.
