Ocean Discovery League Newsletter | September 2023

Ahoy!

This has been an exciting summer of Ocean Discovery League team fieldwork. From spending ten days aboard OceanXplorer supporting OceanX's fourth Young Explorers Program to test deployments in Rhode Island and Connecticut, we're making great progress toward our goals of expanding access to deep ocean exploration through both tools and training.

During the Young Explorers Program, we trained 16 students on various ocean exploration topics, opening our eyes to how future generations will approach solving the vast issues facing our oceans. Their curiosity and passion renewed our sense of commitment to these endeavors and showed us that hope is on the horizon.

This week, 67 countries signed the historic high seas treaty at the United Nations General Assembly, taking another step towards protecting these critical ecosystems. While it still must be individually ratified by 60 nations to take full effect, it's progress, and we'll take it.

Looking forward to the fall, our team will host a series of mini-workshops with DOOS in San Diego this October to gain community insight into the needs of "Cheap and Deep" technology and kick off the co-design of our next phase of solutions.

We are also very excited to announce that our year-end fundraiser will celebrate creativity and how it is a crucial part of innovation. The Ocean Arts & Crafts Festival and Fundraiser will be held in late November and auction the creative works of our team and supporters to raise funds for our mission-driven work. Want to donate an item you created? We'd love to connect!
