Artificial Intelligence (AI) Systems, the Poor, and Consent: A Feminist Anti-Colonial Lens to Digitalized Surveillance
by Alejandro Nuñez
Today’s digital age has created the constant “datafication” of our everyday interactions. The advancements of automated artificial intelligence (AI) systems, and the infrastructure on which they are trained on, have launched us into an era of constant monitoring and surveillance. These conditions bring up two important questions: 1) what are the ethics of consistent data collection? 2) who is most vulnerable and at-risk for having these technologies weaponized against them? Feminist and anti-colonial theories provide frameworks that highlight power dynamics and consent of our bodies.
As the nation moves away from pandemic-era protections, who will be impacted and where are the highest concentrations of vulnerable people? From the household to the state, Dr. Tim Thomas — Director of Berkeley’s Eviction Research Network, Research Director for the Urban Displacement Project, and BIDS Data Scientist — will discuss his teams work on using data and social science tools to mine court record text, link evictions to consumer and administrative data, and develop machine learning models to identify where the highest levels of housing precarity are located.
Date: September 21, 2023, 12pm-1pm
Location: 621 Sutardja Dai Hall

The GIS & Mapping Community of Practice is back this Fall for the 2023/2024 school year! This is an informal meetup that offers participants an opportunity to get to know other people using mapping tools and techniques across campus, regardless of discipline. Whether you're just getting started exploring GIS & Mapping or a seasoned pro (or anywhere in-between), all are welcome to participate!
Susan Powell, Alex Brown, and Tyler Marino, in collaboration with guest speaker Nico Tripcevich, will provide key information on the Community of Practice as well as mapping methods and strategies for fire evacuation. Nico will demo a digital mapping application based on the historic 1923 Berkeley fire that destroyed 640 structures just north of campus.
Date: Monday, September 25 at 3pm (Berkeley-time)
Location: McCone Hall, 5th floor balcony
BIDS Center for Cultural Analytics Inaugural Lecture and Reception
The Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS) is proud to announce the creation of its first Center – the Center for Cultural Analytics, a joint initiative between BIDS and Faculty from the Humanities and the School of Information. The Center develops and refines computational methods as its members interrogate cultural production across a wide range of disciplines. The research will focus on the data-driven analysis of cultural phenomena.
The Center’s Leadership Group and BIDS will host an inaugural event featuring guest speaker Professor David Blei. We hope to see you at the lecture and meet you at the reception!
Berkeley Underground Scholars (BUS) is a program that supports formerly incarcerated and justice-impacted students at UC Berkeley. BUS is housed within the Division of Equity and Inclusion at UC Berkeley. We're currently in search of graduate students in STEM who may be interested in volunteering their time to tutor our students in STEM.
