Please join Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods and Russian River Books & Letters in welcoming home to Guerneville writer and activist Greg King for a special presentation of his new book, The Ghost Forest: Racists, Radicals, and Real Estate in the California Redwoods. The setting is fitting. The Ghost Forest begins and ends in Guerneville, and the book discloses little known information about the stupendous ancient redwood forest that once grew along the Russian River. Greg King was born and raised in Guerneville, and he graduated eighth grade at the Forest Theater. King’s ancestors, four King brothers, arrived along the lower Russian River in 1873. One of the brothers, Thomas King (of the eponymous Tom King Campground in Austin Creek), owned and milled great tracts of ancient redwood in what would become Monte Rio. Register to join us

Ocean Dance
September 22, 2023

Dear Stewards,

Today I offer a special thank you to the Sonoma County Pomo Dancers and Redwood Valley Pomo Dancers for bringing their groups out to last weekend's "Ocean Dance" on the unceded lands of the Kashia Band of Pomo Indians and Coast Miwok. Extra special thanks to dance group leader, Joe Salinas, for having trust in Stewards and State Parks to host this special celebration of native culture for the third time. The dancers and singers were spirited and encouraged by each "aho" from the crowd. The songs shared have been sung by their people for thousands of years. Many aspects of the songs and their regalia are sacred to their culture which must be respected. At the same time, we need their culture and wisdom in our parks to help care for the lands and waters native people lived in harmony with for thousands of years before colonization. It was a great event. We look forward to doing it again and learning more.

Sincerely yours,

Justin Lindenberg
Executive Director
