Last Week: PDG Jerry Pilcher

Our meeting on 13th September 2023 was held at Moerlina School. PDG Jerry Pilcher, our Assistant Governor this year, was our guest speaker this week to a very small audience.

Rtn Sheila Cheng has requested that we specifically share a photo which includes the teacher Ms Kristin Heng, who has integrated the use of the Microscopes into the school curriculum at Chaoyang School in Singapore.
Peace Poles

With World Peace Day falling on September 21st every year, we have been arranging annual Peace Pole Ceremonies at the schools which host Peace Poles as close to September 21st as possible.

The first of these ceremonies took place on Friday 8th September 2023, at North Cottesloe Primary. We have have 2 ceremonies taking place this week.
Recital & Concerto Competition Award Winner

Every year we sponsor $300 worth of awards at the West Australian Music Teachers' Association's Recital & Concerto Competition. This year the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay Award was for the Most Artistic Interpretation of a piece. The Award recipient was a 14 year old pianist, Hannah Wang, who performed "Funerailles" by Liszt.
Aaron Chinyimba and Di Collins attended the Winners Concert and Award Ceremony on Sunday 17th September on behalf of the club; Simone Collins was also present in the capacity of an organiser of the competition.
PRID Dr Ken Collins AO Award for Excellence in Rotary Service

Nominations are currently open for the PRID Dr Ken Collins AO Award for Excellence in Rotary Service.

Rotarians in Western Australia who have provided a significant amount of Rotary service to the community, locally and/or internationally, across at least 3 avenues of service, and have served Rotary in a leadership capacity, are encouraged to nominate.

Full details and the nomination form are available online.

Nominations close on 16th October 2023.

ShelterBox

Vast amounts of floodwater have caused widespread destruction in eastern Libya with up to 20,000 people feared to have died, thousands are still missing and over 30,000 people have been left homeless.

The scale and severity of this disaster is hard to comprehend. Those made homeless are sheltering together in school buildings, where they need blankets, mattresses, and solar lights. Many areas remain inaccessible because of significant damage to the road network, buildings, electricity, and communication lines.

The ShelterBox team is speaking with aid organisations already working in Libya with access to the worst hit areas to see how they can help.

Whilst assessments in Libya are carried out, ShelterBox continues to move forward with their response planning in Morocco. They have arrived in Marrakesh and have met with Rotary contacts and local organisations, with more team members ready to join them in the next few days.

Do you have news to include in the bulletin? Details of upcoming speakers, more background about new projects, photos of events and other information of interest to members and friends of the club? Please email them before Sunday to bulletin@rotaryfreshwaterbay.org.au - verbal updates and updates via other social avenues may not be remembered / seen by the time the bulletin is prepared!
Containers for Change Update
As one of our main sources of income for our projects, your assistance in sourcing, collecting, and/or returning containers is greatly appreciated!

Project Coordinator PP Simone Collins can provide information / support:
  • providing bags for you to fill at home (let your neighbours know you are collecting - they may be willing to help you!)
  • assisting with working with the Scouts if you know a workplace / business that is willing to help
  • coordinating a roster to collect from the Tee Box Cafe - if you cannot pick up on a night you had agreed to help, please let us know so someone else can collect the containers instead
So far in 2023/24, we've raised $529.30 from recycling containers.

Every year, Rotary members around the world mobilize for World Polio Day. We raise awareness of polio and gather support for our global effort to make sure that every child is protected from it. By staying tenacious, hopeful, and committed, we will make history by making polio the second human disease ever to be eradicated.
Government House Open Day - October 28th & 29th

The next Government House Open Day will be the weekend of October 28 & 29. Our club has been asked to put on a Devonshire Tea instead of a sausage sizzle, which will be indoors in the undercroft.

This will be an important fundraising activity, especially with our reduced income from recycling containers. Please keep as much of this weekend as free as you can to help. We will also need family and friends to assist!

The next Rotary International Convention will be held in Singapore from 25th to 29th May 2024. Early bird registration is open until 15th Dec 2023.
A new page about this annual convention is now available on our website.

This month, Rotary reminds us to be intentional about Basic Education and Literacy. Education and literacy are fundamental pieces of peacebuilding and are essential for any and all individuals to become a part of the discussion. Rotary International points out that more that 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate, representing 17% of the world population. Illiteracy is a barrier to equity and inclusion.

Negative effects of illiteracy include reducing the capacity of communities, reducing the ability for engagement across the community, and reducing the ability for those affected to fully access the community capacity. No community is immune to illiteracy.

Projects to contribute to Literacy include projects to support teachers, to assure every student is fed, create Early Act and Interact Clubs to support peace and learning in schools, and to support or provide training opportunities or scholarships for teachers.

On an International project level, clubs can participate in clean drinking water in schools projects, and school sanitation and hygiene projects, including assuring middle and high schools have adequate feminine supplies for students so they can stay in school all month.
