Upcoming Events
  • Save the Date - Friday Sept 22 5pm to dark.  SS Undergraduate Student Retreat
    • Place:  Nara Chalet.
    • Rides: meet outside the AOB at 4:50 pm for a 5:00 Departure
      • Carpooling will be arranged at this time.
    • Once at Nara Chalet - there will be activities (including pet walking, games, dinner, scavenger hunt,  Bonfire, Smore's etc)
    • We will return to the AOB around 9:00 p.m.
    • Dinner includes pasties and salads. Veggie, Vegan, and gluten-free options will be provided. 
  • Career Fair
    • The MTU career fair will be held Tuesday September 19th from 12-5 p.m. at the SDC, all social science students are encouraged to attend. Classes are cancelled from 2-4 pm so that you will have time.  A number of government agencies are going to represented looking for students in the social sciences! 
    • Polish your resumes and be sure to look in Handshake for internships and permanent positions they are hiring for in advance of the career fair.
  • Lunch with Dr. Emily Prehoda (EEP Alumni)
    • Thursday, September 21 11:30-1 p.m. in AOB Commons.
    • All Students are encouraged to attend and network with one of our prominent alumni!
    • Dr. Emily Prehoda (EEP '16 '19) is being inducted into the College of Sciences and Arts Alumni Academy.  This is a major recognition for Dr. Prehoda, and this is a lunch in the department to recognize her accomplishments.
  • New Faculty, Staff, and Graduate Student Portraits
    • Faculty, staff, and graduate students can have a complimentary professional portrait taken by University Marketing and Communications (UMC) during one of the fall semester portrait sessions.
      Wednesday, Sept. 20 — 10 a.m. to noon
      Thursday, Sept. 21 — 10 a.m. to noon
      Friday, Sept. 22 — 10 a.m. to noon
      Portraits will be taken in the UMC Studio, located on the ground floor of the Administration Building (Admin G37). An appointment is required.
    • To schedule an appointment sign in to calendar with your mtu.edu account and find the potrait session date you want. Click the appointment time you want and click save.
    • Portraits will be emailed directly to you three to four weeks after your session.
  • Cidering Party Sat Sept. 30
    • Carl Blair and Steve Walton would once again like to invite you to a cidering party at Carl’s farm on Saturday Sept. 30.
    • Collect your own apples, or collect some from the on-site orchard (his orchard did not bear well this year, so quantities are quite limited there) and scrat (chop) and press them into cider!
    • It is important to bring jugs to put the juice in; also consider bringing snacks and chairs.
    • The event is family friendly, and will go on even with a little rain.
    • The location is Carl and Julie Blair's farm and orchard between Hancock and Calumet at "Gale Farm Rd, Calumet, MI" (or if you like coordinates: 47.204755, -88.461839 or https://w3w.co/activation.subscriber.bats). It’s just south of the Calumet Golf Course off Old County Rd., and best approached from US-41

The Keweenaw Time Traveler wins State History Award
  • The Keweenaw Time Traveler has won the 2023 State History Award from the Historical Society of Michigan. This award recognizes the Keweenaw Time Traveler for its outstanding contribution to the appreciation, collection, preservation and/or promotion of state and local history.  This awards is the highest recognition presented by HSM, the state’s official historical society and oldest cultural organization. You can read more about the award here.
  • The KeTT team would like to thank all of the students, staff, faculty, heritage partners, and the thousands of individuals who have contributed to the online from around the world.
  • The project continues to grow and has inspired new 'time traveler' projects to be built in cities such as New York, Copenhagen, Madrid, Detroit, and New Orleans.
Upcoming Conferences, Webinars, and Talks
  • Speaker: Wednesday September 20th at 5 pm in GLRC 201.
    • Language and Power by Dr. Talia Bugel, a professor of sociolinguistics. 
  •  Global and Community Engagement Conference Call for Student Presenters: Theme "The Power of Partnerships" The conference will be held Saturday Oct 14 in The Memorial Union Building Ballroom. 
    • This conference gives you the opportunity to meet people who are committed to work in support of communities. It is also is an opportunity for students to present in a smaller less intimidating setting.
    • If you are interested in presenting at this conference please submit a proposal  by September 29, 2023
  • Michigan Health Endowment Fund Community Engagement Workshop:  October 6, 2023, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the NMU Northern Center in Marquette
    • At this workshop attendees will see what authentic community engagement and participatory research and evaluation looks like in practice in UP communities.
    • There will also be a panel of organizational leaders.
    • This is a free workshop however registration is required. 
Jobs and Other Opportunities
Undergrad or Graduate Positions: 
  • Kiosk content development for Keweenaw County Historical Society
    • The Keweenaw County Historical Society (KCHS) seeks a student to develop web sites for touchscreen kiosks at the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse and other KCHS museums. The work is primarily historical writing with minimal computer knowledge needed, and the successful applicant will develop historical content and interactivity, not programming. Some graphic design experience or at least appreciation is desirable.  Work will mostly be done remotely with one or two on-site visits in Eagle Harbor as necessary, will begin ASAP and will conclude by the end of this fall semester. The successful applicant will work closely with KCHS project directors, Karen Hintz and Tom Burns and be supervised by Professor Steve Walton in the Dept. of Social Sciences. For the full posting, please see the PDF here.
    • Websites for display kiosks at the sites will be developed in NicePage software (no prior experience necessary, though experience with interfaces like WordPress a plus). The student will meet with host(s) once a week throughout the term and submit a report and new iterations of the website as it develops every 2 weeks. Pay is $1500 paid in three installments.
    • Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and resume expressing their interest in the position by Monday, September 25 to Dr. Steven Walton at sawalton@mtu.edu. Feel free to email him any questions. We would like to have the student start on or about 1 October and complete the project by end of the calendar year.
  •  Community Energy Fellowship Program
    • Fellows will be assigned to selected local governments or tribes, or teams of them, that are participating in the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program.
    • Under the guidance of the Host mentor, Fellows will learn while providing technical expertise and support to hosts in the creation, administration, and launch of new clean energy projects and programs as funded through the EECBG program.
    • Participants will receive a stipend based on their academic and professional background.
    • The deadline to apply is October 8, 2023

  • Paid Student Research Opportunity in the Social Determinants of Health
    • In partnership with a local home visiting organization, students will visit participants in their home, conduct vision screening protocols, collect health-related data, and apply a tailored intervention to address barriers to attaining vision care. Follow-up interactions with the participants will be by phone.
    • Interested students should be at least in their 2nd year (UG) or graduate students.
    • Experience with research methods (either classes or work/volunteer experience) is a benefit but not required.
    • The positions are paid hourly but the hours will be inconsistent week to week based on availability of student researchers, the partner organization schedule, and participant recruitment.

  • Mirzayan Science & Tech Policy Grad Program
    • Seeking current graduate students or recent graduates who are interested in exploring career options outside of academia or industry
    • This is a full-time hands-on training and educational program that provides early-career individuals with the opportunity to spend 12 weeks at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Washington, DC. working with mentors and peers to learn about the role of scientists in policy development. 
    • This year's Fellowship will run from March 4 - May 24, 2024.
    • The deadline to apply is October 16th.

    • This Environmental Politics & Governance Research Associate Position is at the University of Texas at Austin
    • This full-time position will work to conduct resiliency related research in the Austin Metro Area
    • This is a supervisory position of others working in the research lab.
    • A masters degree is required an Ph.D. is preferred.
