Stress, Rest, and Accountability

Hello, subscribers! Welcome back to our series about successful collaborative communities.

This week, we explore how to take care of oneself and one’s teaching community through four reflective strategies aimed at helping you balance teaching, resting, and everything else that life throws at you: (1) establish limits; (2) find your fuel; (3) pick your pleasure; and (4) get an accountability partner. Watch the video for more about each strategy. Then, check out Ideas for Implementation for inspiration about setting goals.

For those of you currently diving into a new term or school year, we hope that these ideas inspire you to set up balanced, well-supported, and enjoyable routines!

Strategies for Self-Care

Helpful strategies for self-care and community connections in the midst of life's chaos

We have the power to cultivate the best for ourselves! Think through the strategies from the video. Then, establish one SMART goal for yourself related to the strategies. As a reminder, the strategies are:

  1. Establish Limits: Use your languaging superpowers and robust subjectivity to articulate your needs. Set boundaries (e.g., use a timer and only check email during the set time) in order to flourish in the other areas of your life.

  2. Find your Fuel: Reflect on your experience and get clear about work that inspires and motivates you. Dedicate yourself to increasing the kind of work that gives you energy. Try to limit the situations that deplete you.

  3. Pick your Pleasure (& Pressure): It is unrealistic to expect complete control over one's workload. That's okay! Be clear about your strengths and consider how they can service the community you're working with.

  4. Get an Accountability Partner: Bright colleagues make us better educators by extending our perspective and cognitive potential. They also share in our emotional work as witnesses to our successes and as a steady shoulder in hard times. Steadfast companions make all the difference!

Apply One Strategy to Your Context with a SMART Goal:

Specific: What is your goal?

Measurable: How will you know you’ve achieved it? By sticking to limits 80 percent of the time? Always protecting your meetings with your accountability partner?

Achievable: Do you know that you can fit your goal into your life? What do you need to do to make it fit within your limitations?

Relevant: How does the goal relate to your larger health and wellness goals?

Time-Bound: When will you complete the goal?

After setting the goal, schedule a time to reflect and self-evaluate your progress! No matter what, take care of yourself and focus on making connections with steadfast companions to build resilient selves and robust communities.
