Reflections on Week 1

Dear Parents/Carers

It was wonderful to see our new Year 7 cohort arrive, mostly smiling, a little nervous, but raring to go and get involved in everything John Hanson has to offer.

You can tell year 8 are not the ‘new’ students as they arrived with an air of confidence following a really successful Year 7 last year.

Year 9 are looking forward to a year where they get to make some choices over what subjects they will study and eventually take examinations in.

Year 10 have started the 2-year journey towards GCSE examination success and are getting to grips with a number of subjects they have not studied before.

Year 11 spent Monday of this week in school considering how best to learn, retain and use all the knowledge, skills and understanding they have learnt and will continue to learn this year. This is with the ultimate aim of having no Year 11 student who says ‘I don’t know how to revise’. They have spent the remainder of the week on Work Experience – a chance to get out in to the ‘world of work’ and gain some valuable experiences. I look forward to hearing how they have gotten on when they return next week.

There have been 3 key changes to what we do at John Hanson this year:

  • Changes to the timing of the school day
  • The school becoming a Phone Free Zone
  • The introduction of a centralised detention system

I am pleased, but not at all surprised, that the vast majority of our students have taken these changes in their stride.

Thank you for your support in making sure your children have had a positive start to the new school year.

Enjoy the hot and sunny weekend with your children.

Regards
Russell Stevens

Thank you once again to those people that donated books to our “Sibling Shelf” appeal. As we now have such a wealth of lovely material we can’t take more contributions at this time – we were really delighted and overwhelmed by the response! The new shelf will be launched to the students very soon and we can’t wait for the students of John Hanson to borrow books that can be enjoyed at home with their younger siblings. We also have some fabulous new titles for 11-16 yrs that we couldn’t resist buying from the recent Book Fayre – as always students are encouraged to come and see Mrs Bailey in the LRC to borrow and explore these new books.

The LRC is open to students before school from 8:10am, at break/lunchtimes, and after-school until 4pm for quiet reading and home learning.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

At John Hanson Community School we are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all students and staff, and to providing a working environment free from discrimination, prejudice and harassment.

We encourage respect and consideration for others, and recognise and value the school as a safe place for learning. The staff at John Hanson recognise that inequalities exist in all levels of society and believe, that as educators, we have a crucial role to play in eliminating all forms of discrimination, in particular against anyone with any of the protected characteristic. We promote equality by dealing with bullying and incidents of discrimination immediately and by educating the young people in our care through assemblies, tutor time, PSHE day sessions and group work where appropriate.

This is part of our responsibility in preparing our students for life after school.

Important EDI events over the next week:

9th – 15th September – Baby Loss Awareness Week

Words you might not know:

Miscarriage: A miscarriage is the spontaneous loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy.
Stillborn: A baby who dies after 28 weeks of pregnancy, but before or during birth, is classified as a stillbirth. There are nearly 2 million stillbirths every year – one every 16 seconds. Stillbirth can be diagnosed by ultrasound examination to show that the baby's heart is no longer beating.

After delivery, the baby is found to be stillborn if there are no signs of life such as breathing, heartbeat, and movements.

Cot death is the sudden and unexpected death of a baby who seems healthy during sleep. It is also called sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). It can happen anywhere a baby is sleeping. This includes a cot, pram, bed, car seat or baby seat.
