What's On This Week

This week we will be meeting at Moerlina School. Our Assistant Governor, PDG Jerry Pilcher, will be visiting and will be our speaker. We hope you can join us in person! We will stream the meeting on Facebook as well.
Happy Birthday to Paul O'Callaghan on September 13th and
Stephanie Rainey-Smith on September 15th!
Last Week: Music for Dementia Mini Update

Our meeting on 6th September 2023 was held over Zoom. We've been averaging 7 members attending the Zoom meetings - we'd love to see those outside of Perth joining us as well!

Hamid Sohrabi gave us a brief update about the music for dementia study with 20 patients from Elderbloom nursing home plus one in Dalkeith. There has been a profound impact so far, and they are looking for funding for a 2nd research assistant.

15 of the headphones have been given out in the nursing home, and they have also been provided with a manual on how to provide personalised music.

Containers for Change Update
As one of our main sources of income for our projects, your assistance in sourcing, collecting, and/or returning containers is greatly appreciated!

Project Coordinator PP Simone Collins can provide information / support:
  • providing bags for you to fill at home (let your neighbours know you are collecting - they may be willing to help you!)
  • assisting with working with the Scouts if you know a workplace / business that is willing to help
  • coordinating a roster to collect from the Tee Box Cafe - if you cannot pick up on a night you had agreed to help, please let us know so someone else can collect the containers instead
So far in 2023/24, we've raised $529.30 from recycling containers.

Government House Open Day - October 28th & 29th

The next Government House Open Day will be the weekend of October 28 & 29. Our club has been asked to put on a Devonshire Tea instead of a sausage sizzle, which will be indoors in the undercroft.

This will be an important fundraising activity, especially with our reduced income from recycling containers. Please keep as much of this weekend as free as you can to help. We will also need family and friends to assist!

Did you know that 776 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate? That’s 17 percent of the world’s population! As we celebrate International Literacy Day (8 September), let’s take a look at the powerful efforts Rotary and Rotaract clubs are making to promote education and literacy, how the Rotary Action Group on Basic Education & Literacy (BELRAG) supports them in their efforts to sustainably improve literacy in communities around the world, and how you can be a part of this transformative mission.

What Rotary does to promote literacy

Globally, Rotary and Rotaract clubs and districts are engaged in a wide range of impactful projects that help students thrive around the world. They range from teacher training, development of educational materials in a collaborative model with local schools and education authorities,  ensuring that preschoolers have access to books in their homes, and showing parents how to engage children in literary discussions as they read with their children.  Projects focusing on literacy, technology, math, and play-based learning in early years classrooms have been developed to support our youngest learners.

Many programs focus on girls’ education, preparing them to be able to contribute financially to their families’ income, and empowering them to be leaders in their families and communities. Innovative community projects that are based on significant community needs have also been planned.

Rotarians and Rotaractors have developed projects that provide access to quality education with the goal of improving the lives of students. In turn, these projects increase the growth and stability of families and communities.
