THE SEARCHLIGHT GROUP ANNUAL HR FORUM – GOING FOR GOLD
The first quarter of 2012 saw the Searchlight Group run another successful HR Forum, our annual event for HR professionals working in the media industry. ‘Going for Gold’ was a standout event with yet another collection of insightful and talented guest speakers and around 60 delegates.
Taking place in the regal setting of 41 Portland Place, our generous programme of speakers began with an informative opening from Toby Russell, discussing the challenges and the opportunities presented via the ever emerging technologies of content sharing and viewing in 2012. Is it a Golden Year for the media and broadcasting industry? Yes, but it is not without its obstacles to scale.
Other issues were highlighted across further presentations, with Richard Broadbent from Sky's graduate recruitment sector and Russell Brimelow from Lewis Silkin, both spotlighting the ever-present issue of Diversity in the media industry, whether this is gender, race, age or class. Delegates were able to listen to case histories and learn strategies to take back to the workplace.
Once again, Steps provided another entertaining interactive-based breakout session that was a highlight of the event for many, raising pertinent issues around work/life balance through drama and group discussion.
Further excellent sessions came from Donna Taberer, Richard Miskella, Tim Bleszynski, Alex Bonnor-Moris and Lisa Dempsey, discussing topics such as company social media policy, talent attraction, and the globalisation of media. We’d like to thank all the speakers, and our sponsors Lewis Silkin and Grapevine jobs for their fantastic support.

Eye-Tracking - How is your online content really being read?
In the land of recruitment, whether you are hiring or looking to be hired, we regularly find ourselves crafting copy for ads or CVs that will grab the reader's attention as quickly as possible.
So it’s an interesting read when going over Jakob Nielson’s (Ph.D. in human-computer interaction; Technical University of Denmark) study using eye-tracking heat-map technology which shines some light on how online users regularly read documents.
The study, recording the patterns of 232 users, reveals that people tend to scan read in an “F” formation;
The first few lines are read heavily and predominantly right across the page.
They then continue to read horizontally but gradually clipping off at the end until eventually it narrows out into a brief scan near the conclusion.
It hammers home that people’s attention will frequently wane. Within the realms of recruitment and job hunting then, ads and CVs need to grab the reader’s attention fast.
Don’t spend the first half of the page outlining how you reached grade 3 in the clarinet in high school. Hit home with your current experience and talents and keep the interest maintained.
The same applies to your job advertisements, get the job’s main role out there fast and use bullet points to create an easy reading experience. Your reader is but one mouse click away from being distracted by something or someone else after all…
