The event is free and open to the public featuring guest speaker Byron Linford, Cedar City Events Manager and a performance by In Jublio Women’s Community Chorale, a recipient of our Artist Grants.  Light refreshments will be served.

Byron Linford, Cedar City Events Manager will be speaking on the Arts and Economic Development.  Byron is charged with bringing events, both sporting and arts, to the Cedar City area.  These events can have a major impact on city economics bringing in patrons from out of the area that provide an influx of tourist dollars to the city and businesses.  Byron Linford will engage participants in the conversation of how the arts can also be an economic driver for the city.

LITERARY GROUP: Just a gentle reminder that due to a conflict with a CCMA event, this month’s Literary Group meeting will be held Wednesday, March 14. (Regular time and place: the Library at 7:00.) The book (which you now have time to finish!) is Edith Wharton’s “The House of Mirth,” and since this year marks the 150th anniversary of Wharton’s birth, we’re right in fashion. The Cedar City Arts Council supports a bi monthly literary group that discusses both fiction and non fiction work. The Literary Group meets at the Cedar City Library in the Park on the first Wednesday of every other month. (January, March, May, July, September, November) For more information please contact Mary Anne Andersen at 435-865-6882.

FINE ARTS FESTIVAL: The Cedar City Fine Arts Festival will be held on Augut 10-11, 2012.  The Fine Arts Festival is held in conjunction with the Utah Shakespearean Festival in the Grove adjacent to the Randall Jones Theater (300 West and Center Street, Cedar City, Utah, 84720).  The focus of this event is fine and visual arts. The Festival will run from 10 AM to 7 PM daily.  Artists wishing more information including the application form should click here.  If you have additional questions or need more information, please email artsfestival@cedarcityartscouncil.org.

The YOUNG ARTIST CHAMBER PLAYERS, a group of talented high-school string players from the Salt Lake City area, will be performing in Cedar City. They will appear in concert on Saturday, March 17, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, 70 North 200 West.  Included in the concert will be “Concerto in C for Two Violins and Two Cellos” by Vivaldi, “Chanson Triste” by Liadov, and Hohvaness’ “Armenian Rhapsody”.

The group will also be collaborating with the Suzuki Strings, of Cedar City, on a movement of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #3.  Concert admission is free and the public is welcome. The Young Artist Chamber Players are supported by grants from the Utah Arts Council; the National Endowment for the Arts; the Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts, and Parks Program; and many volunteers.

Celebrating the Artistry
in All Things Handmade

The Cedar City Arts Council will again team with GROOVEFEST June 22-23, 2012 for the Summer Arts Festival. The theme will remain the same - Celebrating the Artistry in All Things Handmade . This is the 10th anniversary of GROOVEFEST and promises to be the best event yet. As this combined celebration of art and music evolves, it gets bigger and better each year. Because of the phenomenal growth, there have been some significant changes for 2012.

All interested artists must submit a complete application, including photos.   Applications will be accepted through April 2, 2012.  Jurying will be done the week following the application deadline and artists will be notified electronically.  The show entry fee must accompany each application, but checks will not be cashed until the artist is accepted into the show.  This is a significant change from years past and we feel this will benefit the artists, as well as the patrons visiting the arts festival.  Complete details are included on the application form which can be downloaded here

Additionally, the Arts Festival will have the benefit of more shade this year...  we're moving to the southeast corner of the Main Street Park!  This location also has more access to power.  The shadier location will make the days far more comfortable for each artist and will be more condusive to 'strolling' by patrons.   We at the Cedar City Arts Council are looking forward to a diverse, high quality show, and wish to thank our exhibiting artists in advance  for helping to bring the arts in all of their forms to the residents of Iron County and beyond.

Questions can be sent to artsfestival@cedarcityartscouncil.org.

Bottled Monkey is an artistic project formed in 2009. The collaborative project includes three members; Dennis Green, Brian Hoover and Charles Triplett. The self-described “art band” has performed at many venues in the region and several of the performances have been benefit shows for charitable causes. The grant money will help fund a portion of their latest CD project, “Hallowed Ground,” that includes 12 original songs and a 16 page booklet containing lyrical poetry and 6 original pieces of art and will be released in April 2012.

Cedar City Community Players are a newly organized theater group producing family oriented plays and musicals. Through this theater the group hopes to afford residents the opportunity perform onstage and participate in the collaborative process of putting on recognized plays and musicals thus creating a sense of ownership. The grant money will help fund start-up costs, licensing, costumes, venue rental and advertising.

Dolce String Quartet, a second time recipient of grant funds, consists of four high-school students together since the 8th grade. The quartet has played for a variety of audiences in the area including Emerald Point and Kolob residents, and a multitude of special events. The grant money will help fund a professional recording the group will use as a promotional piece.

Southern Utah String Music Festival began in 1983, along with two other festivals, and included 50 students. Currently, the festivals serve up to 1000 students and include string, piano and orchestra. The String Festival will be held on March 3rd at Canyon View High School from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The grant money will help fund the travel, lodging and stipend costs for the out-of-town judges that play an important part in the festival.

Southern Utah Watercolor Society hosts watercolor exhibits and workshops in support of the mastery of watercolor. Many of the events shared with the community are provided free of charge and individual members contribute through dues and donations. The grant money will help in funding future community events.

Southern Utah Woodturners, a club for local high school students, will coordinate three wood-turning competitions this year consisting of Pen Turning, Bowl Turning and Turned Christmas Ornaments. The club volunteers at the schools and assists shop teachers with recruiting, demonstrating the craft and in-class activities. Students are able to re-purpose wood from the community into wood turned art projects. Southern Utah Woodturners received grant funds in 2010 and purchased a flat screen television to enhance demos at Cedar High School. The grant money will help fund the club activities, competitions and tools and equipment for each high school shop.
