LEVAS

Let’s teach our kids about The Great African-American Music Tradition! We have a special opportunity to bring a group of African-American singers from the BGSU College of Musical Arts to the Montessori School to present a program on the history of African-American music. LEVAS (named for “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” a hymn tune) is a group of graduate and undergraduate voice majors who have prepared songs and an interactive narration surveying the range of style periods in African-American music. The presentation begins with Negro spirituals that slaves sang in the fields to build community and hope, and to secretly signal workings of the Underground Railroad. It continues through gospel songs sung in churches, jazz sung in clubs, and opera and Broadway highlights for African-American singers, with notes about how music was used in the Civil Rights movement. To bring us up to the current day, the presentation continues with a look at Motown, Rap, and Hip-Hop. The singers are skilled and engaging, and the program is educational and fast-paced. It would be a big hit with our whole school. The only trick is gathering the funds to pay for it! If this is something you would like your children to experience, please consider making a donation to the cause. A donation cup is in the foyer.
Thanks!
