Groom the Broom Day, April 13th
Camp Meeker & Occidental Community

Join us to reduce the broom that lines our highways and byways. It might be pretty but it is not only invasive, it presents a fire risk along our roads. Meet at the Camp Meeker Fire Department or Occidental Community Center: go out and pull broom (on public or private property) for a community clean up! Registration & Instructions from 9am to 11am, we’ll do pile collection & measuring between 4 and 5pm. Swag and Gift Cards to The Altamont for all participants - the higher the pile, the bigger the prizes!

Rebate Project Success: Pampas Grass Removal & Redwood Trimming

Denise Ellestad heard about the rebate project from neighbor Chief Lunardi and had a lot of pampas grass removed to help make both of their properties safer! A great example of word-of-mouth and neighborhood resilience efforts. Alannah Tomich also did some great work trimming the redwood near their home. Check out the before and after images to see these projects’ impact.

Why is Zone 0 so Crucial for Lowering Risk?

Move It Out! Regulations are coming for Zone 0 in high wildfire risk areas. The first five feet around your home are the most critical area to keep clear to prevent wildfire ignition. This includes all attachments to homes such as decks, gates or fences, and gutters. Governor Newsom’s recent executive order puts a spotlight on this high-risk zone, with new ordinances on the way.

What does this mean for you? Simple - if it can burn and it’s near your home, it needs to be moved out at least 5 feet. Click here to read on and learn more from a publication by Fire Safe Marin.
