New Wine, New Wineskins

Gender conference

What does it mean to be a man? What does it mean to be a woman? Does it even matter? How do these questions bear upon topics such as how we work together in society at large and the church in ways that affirm and promote us in all that God has created us to be? It is so important to seek clarity with civility in pursuit of biblical unity, diversity, and honor in a culture where our beauty as God's human creation is so often endangered by physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse. We will approach gender identity from a variety of angles in a biblically integrated and in a culturally meaningful manner.

New Wine will be hosting this conference on Saturday, March 3 from 9am - 4pm at Multnomah Biblical Seminary (8435 NE Glisan St. in Portland). Speakers include Steve and Celestia Tracy (Mending the Soul Ministries), Valerie Clemen (Multnomah Biblical Seminary), Barbara Feil (Multnomah Biblical Seminary), Paul Louis Metzger (New Wine Director), Brad Harper (New Wine Associate Director), Domani Pothen (Multnomah University), Elizabeth List (Multnomah University), Daniel Christiansen (Multnomah University), Tom Schiave (Multnomah Biblical Seminary), Katie Langner (Multnomah Biblical Seminary), Wink Chin (New Wine), and Beyth Hogue Greenetz (New Wine)

Director's note on the gender conference

I am looking forward to New Wine's Gender conference on March 3 with Dr. Steve and Celestia Tracy, my colleagues at Multnomah, and hopefully you!

I must confess that I have such a long way to go in understanding the various complexities of issues surrounding gender. My desire is that all of us come to the conference in a spirit of prayer and humility to learn and grow together in terms of understanding what Scripture has to say on these matters and how we are to live as men and women in our contemporary context. In keeping with concern to approach the subject of gender with biblical discernment, we must also approach this topic from a relational, Christ-centered posture of dialogue that guards against imposing an ideological agenda.

Here are some of the subjects that we will discuss and which require such a posture to accompany biblical discernment and cultural sensitivity: gender roles, sex trafficking, pornography, gender non-conforming, masculinity, feminity, complementarianism, egalitarianism, the Trinity and gender, gender and social construction, headship, and ethnicity and gender.

We hope everyone who attends will feel safe and free to speak truthfully in love and will be encouraged by how we address such pressing topics as a community. Please join us in prayer, thoughtful reflection, and discussion on March 3. Click

2012 banquet

Mark your calendar for Thursday, April 19 when New Wine will be hosting our annual banquet at the Oregon Zoo. Our featured guest speaker this year will be Mr. David Austin. Mr. Austin serves as Program Director for Mercy Corps operations in North Korea and also serves on New Wine's Advisory Council. He will share with us how the values of New Wine motivate his work at Mercy Corps to bring a cup of water to the thirsty and to serve the widow and the orphan in their distress. This is a great opportunity to hear about the vision and passion of New Wine, talk with other New Wine supporters, and consider the many ways you can partner with New Wine to bear witness to Christ in contemporary culture. Email newwine@multnomah.edu by March 15 for more information or to RSVP.

The John 17:23 Network

The aim of The John 17:23 Network is to encourage, exhort, and equip the multi-ethnic Body of Christ in the greater Portland area to fulfill Jesus' prayer that we might all be one. The Network exists in partnership with New Wine and local churches including Central Bible Church, Trinity Full Gospel Pentecostal Church, Cedar Mill Bible Church, St. Johns All Nations Church of God in Christ, Tigard Covenant Church, Imago Dei Community, Daniels Memorial Church of God in Christ, and other local churches. Regular gatherings are held every second Sunday of the month at rotating locations in the Portland area. To receive more information about gatherings, email newwine@multnomah.edu.

Grant received

Earlier this month, participants in the project funded by a grant New Wine received from The Association of Theological Schools took a retreat together. This project is designed to help our graduates prepare for effective ministry as Evangelicals in a multi-faith society today. The results of this work will be particularly relevant to pastors, chaplains, and Christians in the marketplace as they work among increasingly diverse populations.
