IYC

Because the co-operative movement has globally provided significant value to people, the United Nations has declared 2012 to be the International Year of the Co-operatives (IYC).  Their objective is to raise awareness of the success of the “member owned and member managed” business model in achieving significant economic and social value to economies and communities around the world and to encourage others to develop new co-operative enterprises.

On the IYC web site, the United Nations notes the following in promoting co-operatives as a thriving platform:
According to the International Co-operative Alliance's Global300 report (2011), the world’s largest 300 co-operatives generated revenues of USD 1.6 trillion—which is comparable to the GDP of the world’s ninth largest economy (Spain).
This model is on track to become the fastest-growing business model by 2020.
Co-operatives operate in a range of sectors—ranging from banking, credit, housing, health, retail, food, utilities and agriculture.
Co-operatives are owned by nearly one billion people across the globe.
Co-operatives employ nearly 100 million people—20 percent more than multinational enterprises.
Co-operatives promote the fullest possible participation in the economic and social development of all people, including women, youth, older persons, persons with disabilities and indigenous peoples.
Co-operatives innovate to meet the needs of their members, and may offer new products or services—ahead of competing businesses—because members ask for it.

The Minnesota Street Market intends to foster an active discussion on our food and arts co-operative through the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section in future newsletters.  We encourage your review and feedback on the topics, plus your ideas on each subject.
